Received my Wouxun KG-UV6D in the mail the other day.

Can someone recommend a programing software (preferably a free one)?  I have been scanning with the radio and it works great.  Still can't get the repeater programming figured out so I have yet to talk to anyone yet.

Thanks!  Clearly chirp is the way to go.

Is there a list of repeaters and designated frequencies for my area in the software or do I just enter them manually on the computer?  If it's not in the software are comprehensive lists available elsewhere?

You can download them from repeater book in CHIRP. Probably won't have them all, but it is a good start.

I've downloaded chirp.  It's unable to communicate to the radio.

Edit: Apparently I'm not very computer savy. At all.  Spent hours trying to make it work.  No luck.

Need to step away for a bit and try again tomorrow.

It's more than likely a driver issue with your prog cable.  for some good advice look here: Miklor

I came here only to say the above.

the daily builds might work better sometimes, though as mentioned already, the most common issue is with the USB serial port driver.

Go to this thread.  Everything said about the UV-5R and programming with CHIRP is equally valid with your radio.

http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_22/664274_Baofeng_UV_5R_information.html

First it goes through programming the UV-5R manually, and then with CHIRP.  There is information and links about
the cable problem, setting up Com Ports, etc.

Remember, the radio does not have a driver.  The CABLE has a driver.  Different brands of cables require different
drivers.  The Prolific driver is not the problem.  The COUNTERFEIT Prolific cables are the problem.  They will work
with older 3.2.0.0 driver.  It's all in that thread linked above.

Also there are step by step screenshots, and you should be able to do similarly with your radio and CHIRP.

You want 5.0 khz channel spacing, or tuning increments, and Wide FM, not Narrow.

I think daily is only a real contender when running on a repo based Linux disto. You can set it to autoupdate...unless it is needed as the only supported form of your radio.

I had the local HAM shop program it for me yesterday.  I'll work on making CHIRP work this weekend.

Good news is I was finally able to get in on my first net.    Lots of fun.  Now I just need to set up an antenna so I can transmit from inside the house.
