I am going to try to get Pocket RxTx to work with an 857d for someone and am curious if I can just use the cable to plug into the back of the radio and connect the usb cable to the tablet or if I have to run Signalink. Not looking to run digital modes, they just want to use the tablet for a waterfall display. I want to make sure we have everything we need so i am not making multiple trips and having to wait for another order to come in.

I'm fuzzy.

Wants waterfall...but not wanting digi modes?

What connections does the Android tablet have?

Yup, confused myself but trying to help out. Android has a micro usb connector And we have the cable for that. I know with the 7200 i can run the usb to an adapter and plug it into the tablet and it is done. Looking to see if we need something like usb link to do the same for the 857 or if we can just run cat to usb, use the female to female usb adapter and plug the cable and tablet into it. I am thinking it is more for rig control software from what i have gathered.

if they just want rig control then what about one of the buletooth adapters? i dont think you will get the waterfall but you can do remote rig control with the BT adapter.

Yeah the 857D isn't a sound card.
The only way to get waterfall will be via audio.

for my S5 phone, you need a TRRS connector to get to the mic input.  I think some of the tablets do not have that option.

You could always use this app with just a simple audio in from the radio to the phone:

If all you want is to see and decode digital you will need an app for your tablet or phone... they are both to small to type with, and a way to get
the signal to your tablet.

Simply connect a cheap computer mic to the tablet, place the mic next to the radio's speaker.  That's it.  Done.

I think he's more trying to do like a pan-adapter to see large parts of the spectrum. Won't work with a 857D to my knowledge, if that is your intention, a few khz at best is all you will get. And you need to plug the audio out into your tablet mainly for that.
