I have been on a bit of a self-imposed vacation from ARFCOm and radio after my dad passed away, trying to keep the shop up and keeping priorities in check.
I am back with both now, so W4WTF is back. on the air. |

Good to see you are back! I am still pissed off at myself for passing on those military discone antennas you posted here a few years back. Go check a closing Radio Shack nearby. I just picked up a Discone for 2M for a decent price. These were a little...beefier... http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c90/tglance/ant5.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c90/tglance/ant1.jpg http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c90/tglance/ant6.jpg and in those pics I only had 1/2 the elements in the legs and top, it can be twice as big. Holy Crap. What were those resonant at? |

Here is the original thread on them:

I'd love to find one of those antennas. Damn. I wish I had gotten on this ham radio forum sooner. Missed another good one. FWIW: a couple weeks ago, I put together an antenna that sort of looks like that, but it isn't a discone. I had purchased an Alpha Node Hub at the ARRL Centenial Convention to play around with. I envisioned all kinds of stuff to do with it. This was the first thing I tried. I bought seven, MFJ monoband 17 meter mobile antennas (just like a "Hamstick") and screwed them together into a configuration with one vertical radiator and the other six screwed into the holes at a 45 degree angle as tuned radials. I did this on the one day in the last few months we had weather above freezing. I got it tuned up but haven't tried to use it on the air. It was getting dark when I got it tuned up and since then, the weather was too cold for me to mess with it further. What's it good for ? I have no idea. |

<snip> Holy Crap. What were those resonant at? Discones are resonant (or arguably non-resonant, but with 50 ohm impedance) everywhere in their coverage band which is usually very, very wide (e.g. 50-1300 MHz is a common spec.) The low end is determined by the length of the longer legs, and the high end is usually determined by losses, resonance, construction quality and the diameter of the disc. |
