Hello everyone, I don't post much but I read a lot of the post. I purchased a UV-82 around Christmas time after reading about the cheap Ham radios in General Discussion. I then gravitated over to this forum.
I took the test a couple of weeks ago and passed the tech and general, bombed the extra (that's ok I didn't really study for it) Currently working on getting my HF set-up together, should be up and running by next weekend. Thanks for the information posted, I am sure as I get going I will have lots of questions as well. KM4HKD (hopefully this will be changing in a few weeks, I applied for a vanity the same day my callsign showed up in the database!) |
| Congrats!!!....and make sure to give a listen to the un-official ARFHAM Podcast Fo Time |

Congrats! If you get a chance join us on the Friday night net! Need to remind him that it is BYOB. I was on the phone. Its a pita to type all that out. Then again you didnt bother to tell him that Newcastle is the official beer either. |

No nothing that fancy for the HF setup. We go camping a lot, so I wanted to be able to be portable. The HF setup is a FT-857D, LDG YT-100 tuner and a Buddipole. Still waiting for the Buddipole to arrive! 857D is a great rig for camping. Have you been reading the SOTA threads? You'll need batteries unless you are car-camping. Welcome to the hobby! I also went from zero to General, don't panic though, getting your Extra doesn't cost you as much as getting your General! |
Congrats and welcome.
I use my 857D and YT-100 in a go box A LOT. It's a great combination. I used to throw a wire into the trees, but then I went a different way on the antenna. I'm now using a Little Tarheel II with the 52" whip mounted on a short grounding rod. It's really stealthy and easy to set up. Plus, I can bypass the YT-100 since you tune the antenna itself. |
