We have to know how the SB230 is setup to answer that question. IDK myself, but a buffer would relieve my worries. 73, Rob

Good choice on the Heil. It looks like you do not need an interface for the amp key line, if you do not do "full break in" CW you should be GTG 73, Rob

I don't think its necessary on the AL-80B, but I run one on mine just in case.

No amp buffer needed with the TS-590 and the AL-80B. I ran that combo with zero issues.

A buffer? Are you talking about an interposing relay for keying an amplifier? I never heard it called that way but I never used one. Most base rigs have an internal relay or an "open collector" transistor circuit rated for at least 1 Amp. It should work with any modern amplifier. I wired my 25 y.o. HF-2500 amp to my FTDX3000 directly. It seems to work fine. Your TS-590 should be similar.
