Anyone else happen to watch and catch the episode: To Fail is to die?
http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/doomsday-preppers/videos/to-communicate-is-to-survive/ looks like the episode is going to be on again Thursday. The guy with the comm bunker looks to have more gear that half of our forum members combined. I was surprised that he's only a tech but then again that's all he needed for VHF/UHF work. Maybe my thinking is very skewed but when I hear someone that is a retired military comms specialist immediately assume he would be more than a tech class based on what they say in the show and him working the Virgin Islands from West Virginia. Anything is possible and it was entertaining. :) I am jealous that he has a natural gas well on his property and I bet Yaesu/LDG didn't mind all the free advertising. |

I saw that, but I guess I wasn't paying that much attention. I think he must have been at least general, as he definitively had HF--and I can't imagine him being on HF so much and not getting a general ticket. I think the UHF/VHF was primarily for local (talking to his father down the hill in town and such). |

Quoted: He certainly has a lot of nice gear I wonder what his capabilities are for portable ops. He was interested in being the base of info for the area, as he was top of the hill and it was flooding he was concerned about (IIRC). |

Based on what he was saying in the show, I don't think much. He was interested in being the base of info for the area, as he was top of the hill and it was flooding he was concerned about (IIRC). Quoted:

While I do have a fixed station like most of us, in an emergency I do like the flexibility of a portable EMCOMM setup. My IC-7000 with an air card equipped laptop can do a lot. Proposal out this week to give them CQ and data portion acess on several bands they don't have acess to now. 80/40/15 I believe. Quoted:

Remember, the techs now get a section of 10m for phone comms. Proposal out this week to give them CQ and data portion acess on several bands they don't have acess to now. 80/40/15 I believe. I would have never gone pass tech. |

Do you mean CW? If so, that's not much of a grant as there's already substantial CW across the bands for Technician - the lack of voice is why I wanted to upgrade, digital (for me) isn't interesting. |

Upgrading from Technician to General is not hard these days. The biggest hurdle used to be 13 WPM code, but that's gone now.
