I will be operating next February from the British Virgin Islands for about a week. I am planning to bring the 857D to use, but in case of an accident I have decided to take a backup radio (2 is one and one is none). Since the 857D and it's kit is already pretty bulky, and they aren't cheap either, I have decided to take a CW rig as the backup. Initially I was looking at the various kits, but none have much power and aren't multi-band. Eventually I ended up on the youkits page and found the HB-1A. Has all 3 bands I plan to operate on (with a mod, anyone know what the mod is?), 5W output, in a decent case, has a keyer. $200. Anyone have one of these and can comment on them? Is there another option in this price range? |
