Just bought one of the new model B+ raspberry pis. Trying to decide what I could use it for in my fairly new ham hobby. Not sure if anyone has tried this but figured this was the place to ask. I'm thinking of using one with along with a small portable LED screen to work digital modes in a portable fashion. Thinking about all enclosed in a small weatherproof container. Yes I know that's what laptops are for....but what fun is that! Basically I'm thinking of emcomm style boxes with a LED screen mounted behind the ol' cutting board mounting panel along with power/antenna/radio jacks. Anybody know if this would be feasible or already done something along this line? TIA

I had thought of the same thing. It has been done I've read, the processor is pretty much maxed out. I'm still thinking I may try it. Especially if gcw keeps throwing out Linux projects.

Yes the 700MHz CPU does tend to put a crimp on things but; 1) it can be overclocked easily and safely enough to around 1GHz using raspi-config and 2) the ARM architecture is more efficient than the x86 for the same CPU speed.  I have been putting heatsinks on my Raspberry CPU, GPU and regulator to help a bit.  I wrote a quick-and-dirty shell script to display the CPU and GPU temperature and warn me if I hit 70C.  The chips are supposed to be industrial grade rated to 80C but I would like to know if they hit 70C.  To date, I have gotten to about 61C max.  If it gets too hot, I can always removed the case cover and the temperature drops markedly, especially with the heatsinks doing their job.

BTW, any problems with the USB ports on the B+?  I read some reports there were software issues with Raspian and the B+ USB ports because a different controller is being used.  It was/is supposed to be fixed at some point.

Yup, combined with a TNC-Pi.
