Fldigi. It is lightweight, very capable and simple to set up and use. If you want heavyweight bloatware that does literally EVERYTHING and don't mind such complexity, then Ham Radio Deluxe, either the legacy free version 5.x, or the new pay to play version 6.x.

I like HRD a lot. The integration of digital, logging, and being able to upload to LoTW with just a few clicks makes it worth it to me.

The old free version of HRD was incompatible with my 1200.

I downloaded FLDGI, but it has quite a steep learning curve.  I have ZERO digital experience.  I wasn't successful in reading a signal on digital, but I did get it to read a little CW.

Compared to other software Fldigi has the shallowest learning curve, so perhaps it was best that you started there!

I recently recommended the following video for Fldigi setup on a IC-7200. While it is specific to the Icom and not your radio, it nevertheless is an outstanding video and the concepts should translate right over to your setup, the exception being that there may be some important settings in the 1200 that need to changed. I'm on travel right now but if I get a chance I'll take a look at the Yaesu manual. In the meantime I recommend that you watch this video and use it as a step by step guide.

For me, I prefer the Ham Radio Deluxe over fldigi, mainly because the control buttons are bigger and easier to see. And now it's what I'm used to, but I still have fldigi because I sometimes use flamp & flarq but I also have a slew of other digital programs as well.

I used HRD for several years, and liked it, but it got to be just way too bloated.  The last free version would not work, no connection between the radio and Digital Master 780 (digital portion of the program).  If it was possible to get a stand alone version of DM780 I'd use it.

So, after using HRD since I was just a SWL'er this past year I switched to FLDigi and didn't look back.  Does all I want from a digital program and more.

Some will mention Digipan, and that used to be a good, lean, mean, fighting machine.  But Digipan has not been updated in 10 years.  It no longer works on the latest versions of Windows.  It has reached the end of its usefulness.  Too bad.  If you are still running an XP machine, good, have fun, but Digipan's life has come to an end.

There are a few others, but let me urge you to try FLDigi, along with its add ons, FLAmp, and FLMsg.  This has all the functionality of DM780 (digital part of HRD) but without satellite tracking, rotator control, logging, garage door control, brainwave monitoring, and thermostat control.  FLDigi is just a digital program, and that's what I like about it.

Julian's video is GREAT!

Thank you for the informative video on setting up and using Fldigi.  I have a Yaesu FT 857 d and signal link but I still found it very informative.  Does anyone have a tutorial on setting up an 857 d and a signal link ?  Thanks
