Okay, instead of starting a new thread every time I have a stupid question, I figured I would just post them all to this thread.
I'm trying to figure out my next step after buying an ht. the local repeaters do not have a lot of traffic on them. I can pick up a little traffic from surrounding towns but I'm just not sure if there is enough out there to justify having a 2m base station. I do have a family friend that is about 100 miles from me that talks to his son in law who is about 120 miles away from him on 2m. His son in law is just above me. I don't see them but once or twice a year so hard to ask them what I need. Before I jump into hf, I guess I need to figure out this. Seems like everybody has a 2m so I guess I will start there also. If nothing else, I need something just to be prepared. Here are my requirements. I want it to be portable. I don't really want to mount it in my vehicle but being able to grab it and go on trips would be great. For instance, I'm going to visit my parents at the beach and would like to grab it and take it along. This will also be a requirement of an hf rig when the time comes. So here is a list of what I need. Please add to the list since I don't really know everything I need and recommend some brands or places to buy without breaking the bank. How does this look for a base unit/grab it and take it with me radio? What would be a good power supply to use for this and for future possible use with a mobile hf unit? |

I use an HT for mobile (get one that will run off of 12v) 5 watts and a mag mount ant handle all my needs. A hand mike is also uses full and you will need an adapter to connect the ant to to the rubber duck connection. A simple 1/4 wave ground plane will help for a home ant (can be made with an SO239 and copper wire. Good luck and have fun. |
