Will be a 2ASTX, K5PLD club setup multi op. |
|
I'll be in charge of the club station, instructing operators in the operation and use of the two Icom IC-7200s.
Anyone caught just randomly pushing buttons and twiddling knobs will have their fingers cut off.
My quick start manuals with pictures and arrows and captions will be beside each radio and I'll be there to answer questions and keep them off the same band. Our 10-15-20 Mosley beam's rotator is is locked up for some reason, but we have it aimed NNE from our Gulf Coast location, so it should catch a good portion of the USA. The other HF antennas include a 132' OCFD which will cover all but 15 meters. There is also an ordinary centerfed dipole cut for 3.910 mhz. We will have generator on natural gas, solar recharging of battery power. For another few added points, we have already had excellent coverage in the local newspaper, will have a reporter visit on Field Day. And a number of officials will visit for demonstration and photo ops... the Mayor, some of the city council members, the local Homeland Security guy, and others. And most importantly, good eats. Biscuits and coffee for morning, a nice noon meal, and fingerfoods for the rest of the day. Trays of little sammiches (ham, chicken, roast beef). Soft drinks and coffee, various deserts. I can promise you, a good time will be had by all. |

I am going to visit some friends (non hams) in Chicago. The politics at field day in our club are insufferable. They won't even let me operate CW because I am not an old guy. That's a bit sad, I guess they forgot where they came from. I bet you could find plenty of FD opportunities in the Chicago area if you wanted. Just show up and offer to operate, and I bet they'd let you blast some CW for an hour or two! I needed some new shirts to wear to work and ordered them from the ARRL a month or so ago. I've been wearing a blue polo shirt and a blue T-shirt off and on for a couple weeks celebrating the 100th Anniversary, but this week I'm going to break out the red 100th polo and Friday I'm wearing the ARRL purple Field Day T-Shirt!!! |

I would be more excited as a new member of the ham community if field day wasn't in a time of the year when it's 100 or more outside and 95% humidity as well. Since we are operating as an EOC, we will be inside, out of the sun and heat, with good air conditioning, comfortable chairs, an office we have access to with couches that sleep real well. We know how to do this the right way. |

I thought about doing that. I also thought about bringing the K3 my paddles and a wire up to my buddies house. Pull out the Suburban's battery and crack open a few home brews... |
