.... where do you put the serial number?

Say for example you're using HamLog on ipad/iphone to then upload to LOTW.

You can put it wherever you want if you're not actually submitting a log to be placed in the contest.  I never submit logs to be placed so I just put it in the comments field in HRD and LOTW ignores it since it doesn't use it.

If you're submitting a log in a contest that uses serial numbers like the CQ WPX contest that's going on right now you need to follow their rules.  I can't help since I've never done it, but all the info should be on the website for each particular contest.

The WPX logs must be submitted in Cabrillo format and each entry looks like this:

QSO: 7023 CW 2009-05-31 0033 AK1W 599 2057 K1AR 599 609

The 2057 and the 609 are serial numbers.  Check the contest website for more info, and I'd suggest using a contest logging software if you plan to submit a contest log.  Again, something I've never done.  I don't know if HamLog does that or not.  Probably need to see their website for questions about using it in a contest.

Would it matter to the recipient if he is submitting a log for an award/contest?

Nope, you don't need to submit a log for your contact with him to count in a contest.  You only need to submit an official contest log entry if you want to compete in the contest.  Your log entry into LOTW counts there for awards without a serial number.
