Recommend a good compact, or mobile mount, 50 (plus) watt 2 meter rig, capable of  SSB and FM
70cm and 2M would be even better.
low power, or gigantic desk size rig will not work for me.

What is out there?

Mobile rover during contests I'd bet. 73, Rob

Weak signal, mountain top.
knife edge diffraction, and meteor scatter experimental ops.
I have a nice portable 2 meter yagi. Want to play around with long range vhf.

I own and operate a 2 meter repeater, with a 100 foot tower, on a hilltop, reaches a solid 80 miles radius.
FM bores me to tears.

A transverter will typically give you better performance

Transverter, interesting. More cables and boxes. Tempting to get one of those mini
DC to daylight rigs, FT817.
just seems excess complicated, fragile and power hungry.
10 watts VHF SSB, small KISS radio, 5 element yagi, 8 amp AGM battery, and climb a mountain.
some asian fellow should build an SSB handheld, sell it for 90 dollars.

The Yaesu FT-857D should do what you're looking for.  It's very small, even for a mobile radio, will do 100W out, and it's HF - 6m + 2m & 70cm.  It will do SSB on VHF & UHF.

No internal power, so you'll have to supply your own.

The FT-897D is slightly larger but can handle an internal battery and has some other advantages that might outweigh its larger footprint.  Other than that, it's identical to the FT-857D

Ic-7100 will do 50w 2m SSB

FT290 MKii would be cool.
Someone should build a 2M+70cm  all mode portable.
and sell it for  around $400 or so.
.
. HF is an entirely different  animal, and HUGE  compromise is built into a  compact, portable combination HF+ vhf+ uhf rig.

Icom IC-7000 or IC-7100.  Definitely would not try to try to deal with a transverter setup as a mobile/portable operation.

A rig like the vintage all mode 2 meter battery powered Yaesu FT290 mkII would be about right.

I have a few Kenwood TR-751A All Mode radios that get the job done.
They pop up on ebay about once every month or so. Prices range from the upper $100's to just above $300.

ETA: Only does 25 watts.
