I bit the bullet and installed a Breedlove NMO mount on the roof of my truck (2005 Dodge diesel).  Drilling that hole was not easy.  I installed a new Yaesu FT-1900r and wired it straight to the battery and the antenna is a short, dual-band with a center coil.  I can receive WX just fine.  I can key the mic and get a response from the repeater (not another person) that is loud and clear.  But, last night I was hearing pieces of a conversation.  I'm also getting intermittent static that my squelch won't overcome.

I thought drilling the hole and connecting the antenna wire would be the hard part and I would be on the air without problems.  Does anybody have any ideas how to fix this?

The first thing that comes to mind is a broken/shorted spark plug cable, but....

did you ground the radio body as well?

An additional connection developing somewhere, like maybe a piece of insulation came off and copper/shielding is sometimes touching sheetmetal?

I'll check the antenna wire.  Isn't the negative attached to the radio body inside?

this happen on All Programmed Repeater Freqs?

Does the repeater require a tone?

This is what I'd check.

Locally we had a network that was kinda of goofy. Some of the remotes required tone while others didn't. There was a reason but if you didn't know then depending on which remote you happened to hit you might catch only half the conversation.

With the tone off would I still be able to hear the repeater identification?  I can hear the repeater ID clear.

Yes, you will still hear with the tone off.

Did you check the antenna & mount with an antenna analyzer or SWR meter?

first take is something is shorting in the antenna somewhere, feedline or mount. do you have a mag mount you can just pop up there and run the line in through the window to the radio to test if the same issues happen?
double check the NMO mount, make sure it's not off center in the hole and all that.

Yes, but...

Sorry, missed the part about being able to kerchunk the repeater. If you're getting an ID back then I'd look at the cable/connections as others have suggested. It's a mobile install. Are you actually mobile while this is happening? Not to say you can't have intermittent connection issues stationary but they're more likely to manifest on the go.

Break the components down. Try another NMO antenna if you have one. Try another run of coax to a mag mount. Stuff like that.

It almost sounds like your in an area with high rf interference.

It would be nice if you had another antenna and a radio to compare this to. You may be hearing another repeater from far away on the same frequency. Do you hear the static with the engine off?
