I was thinking back to when I was a MARS operator and
running Phone patches back to the states from the ship

It got me wondering about how many guys have actually ran a
phone patch and if anyone is really even setup to do them any more.

I'm talking about old time Phone Patches "Over"
(not Autopatch on a repeater).

How many here have done it , and is anyone still setup to do them?

They are still somewhat common in the Marine VHF world...in the northeast anyway. It's been a long time since I've used one though. Haven't been around the ham world long enough to have ever seen one.

I've never done it, and really don't know anything about it.  But when I was a kid (1960s), my father ran a phone patch for someone who was in Quito, Ecuador, for a year or so.  I can't recall the exact circumstances, but I believe she was either a missionary or in the peace corps, and her parents were in the Atlanta area (where we lived).  It was basically an every weekend event.

My dad used to run them as a teenager, but I have never seen one in action.  I see Heathkit ones at hamfests often for very little money.  I always thought about picking one up just because.

You read that article in December's QST, didn't ya?

I remember talking to a ham thru an autopatch when I was a kid.  A guy in our Commodore computer club called the house using it.  Never had one myself, though.  But with VoIP telecom being so cheap, I'd like to see about setting it up on one of our repeaters.

Air Force MARS will still run phone patches for planes on HF.

When i was a kid, in the early 1970's, My Mom woke me at 0100am
To come to the kitchen phone and talk to my Dad
He was aboard ship with the USMC

I was so young, that i was amazed that there was a 01:00am
Years later, i learned about MARS and thought
HOW FUCKIN COOL WAS THAT

I was talking on HF and didnt even know it

God bless all MARS operators

I ran a patch for a person at Jonestown Guyana, The People's Temple, even have a QSL. This was shortly before the mass poisonings.

I don't have the equipment any more, but it was a homebrew tube patch made by my elmer.

I've never ran one, but I have a Globe Tele-Patch sitting right here.  Slightly modified with cables coming out of it ready to connect to the previous owner's Collins gear.  The old school one-pin mic connectors and the 4-prong phone block.  The 87 year old guy I got my Yagi from gave it to me, and I'd have to guess it was from the 60's.

ETA:  I was going to tear it apart and scrap it but if another Ham has one I'd be willing to see if I can hook it up and actually complete a phone patch some time.  The actual need for these is long gone but it would be fun to play with.

I'm not so sure about that.... (the need being gone)

That was part of the reason I brought up this subject
