I have exhausted my knowledge and research capabilities w/ this. I have very little knowledge of amateur radio and have tried searching but can't find a fix. I recently picked up a Baofeng UV-82L to get my feet wet in amateur radio. I have been trying to program it but keep running into road blocks. The software I have used (CHIRP and Baofengs) has been easy to use but getting the radio to connect is where I'm having troubles. I first used the driver that came installed in the Baofeng cord....that didn't work and my computer was unable to recognize the device. I then searched and found a download driver (Prolific). It is showing the device is connected and working but I still can't download to it. While in the CHIRP software I go to the menu bar (at the top) and click Radio but "upload to radio" is not able to be selected. While searching I found out you can select "download to radio" from that same menu and then fill in the radio make and model and that will allow you to see the radio in CHIRP. Well, I tried that and my radio model (UV-82) is not one of the options so I tried UV-3R and UV-5R but after the cloning window closes it says "radio did not respond". I have also checked to make sure the ports are correct and they are. And the cord snaps into the radio so I think it is making correct contact and doesn't need to be filed as I have seen some do.
As I have said I do not know what else to do. After messing w/ this most of the day I am tired and keep running into the same fixes over and over that are not working for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Which version of Chirp are you using? According to the Chirp website the UV-82 is only supported in the "daily build" of Chirp.
You can try downloading the latest daily build here: http://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ and see if it will recognize the radio. |

Which file, in the link, do I download? I'm assuming it should be "chirp-daily-20131121-win32.zip" since I am running Windows 7? If so, that's the one I did and I saved it. Now which file in the download do I need? |

I JUST did an 82 install, and can verify that you do need a daily build. I did mac so I can't help you with which file, but you will be uninstalling the official Chirp release and installing the daily.
Once you get that, download from the radio, copy paste all the channels you want, and then upload it. Pretty easy once you get them talking. The build from 20131031 is GTG |

Now which file in the download do I need? I would start with the "chirpw.exe" file. That should either install the program, or run it. If it does not ask to install and you want it installed like the other programs, there is the installer zip on that same download page. I haven't used the dailies, so perhaps someone else with a bit more experience can correct me if I am wrong. |

Baofengs are inexpensive but a difficult choice to learn on.
You most likely have the well-known issue of a USB cord with a counterfit Prolific chip (almost all of them), which will not function with the current genuine Prolific driver. You need an older version of the Prolific driver, or if you happen to have a computer with a serial port, just use a serial cable. Radios that are actually designed and intended for amateur radio use are far easier to learn on vs the asian market land mobile radios. |

I'm totally new to HTs, and honestly it wasn't that challenging. My amazon.com cable had a counter-fit chip, but with a little googling I was able to find a functioning driver. After that, the chirp software was simple as can be. I found the radioreference.com and .csv support to be extra helpful. |

| Thanks everyone for the help. I finally got it connected and working. One more question. I created a list using CHIRP and downloaded it to the radio, but can't find it. I checked the "MEM-CH" (menu 27) and didn't see it. Anybody know where it could be? When I was creating the list in CHIRP I didn't see a way to store it in a specific place. Probably missed it somewhere. |

I'm lost as to what your asking. CHIRP loads the channels directly. Your "list" is loaded as written, 1 to channel 1, 2 to channel 2,.... Quoted:

Probably missed it somewhere. I understand as to why you are lost. It's my fault because I assumed something that was incorrect. I thought the channels were banks of channels instead of individual channels. I was thinking the list I saved was in channel 1 and that I could access that and scroll through my saved frequencies. But now I realize I can only store 99 frequencies and not 99 banks w/ a group of frequencies in each bank. Now that I know where my saved frequencies are I'm still having trouble accessing them. When I go to menu I do this sequence; menu>>mem-ch>>menu>>ch-001>>menu (to select ch-001)>>exit/ab. When it returns to my A/B frequency screen the frequency does not change to the one stored in mem-ch01. So, even though I have the frequencies stored in the mem-ch section, I still can't get them to the transmit/receive screen. I know the saved frequencies are there because I saved 22 in the channels and I have 22 channels full on the HT. But I still can't access them. |

You select the channels from the up and down arrows on the keypad not through the menu. The menu you are going to is to manually program a channel into that slot. So how do I get to the point of selecting the channels w/ the up and down arrows? All it does when I push them (the arrows) is change the current frequency up and down the preset steps (mine is currently set at 2.5K). I can't figure out how to access the channels I stored via CHIRP. Thanks for trying to help. |

You are in the frequency mode. this is where you can dial in a frequency. You need to go into the channel mode. To do this turn the radio off then hold down the menu button while you turn it back on. Do it again to get back to the freq. mode. This is the only complaint about this model. The other models have a button to do this. |

As everyone knows the instruction manual leaves a lot to be desired. The glitches w/ the Baofeng software and cables adds to the irritation and the online help sites are very helpful but still don't cover everything. But, IMO, once you get past all that it seems to be a good radio, especially for the money. If it will hold up to some abuse and time I think this can be a great radio......well, once the initial setup is overcome. |
