I've made a bunch of contacts lately on psk31. I've noticed when I take my rig "out" of data mode, I can see a ton more QSO's on the waterfall. I even picked out a weak one in England & he was able to copy me fine. I would never have seen his signal if radio had been left in the data mode. When I switch to data mode, it reduces greatly the signals shown on the waterfall. Is that normal? I mean I hate to have to switch out of data to see a weaker signal, then switch back to contact them. Am I missing something here? or is that just how it is?

Thx,
HS

Do you have filters in your radio? Try listening to the same thing using USB and then switch to CW mode.

yep...sounds like a filter bandwidth issue

What radio are you using ?

Now Derek45 u know I have same rig as you Kenwood TS-590S.

I just made a contact with a fellow in CO & rig was not even in data mode? Hmm now I'm more confused.

If I listen to same thing & switch to CQ, waterfall stops displaying data streams all together. Although I will hear some CW creep in when not in data mode.

Should AGC be on or Off? What about Data High & low Cut?

Forgot to add, I'm using the radios internal card for processing.
HRD connected via USB interface.

Thx,

Ok,...I thought you were a 590 guy but wasn't sure

I'm still trying to wake up

set to DATA
look at your VFO knob.
hear it, at the 02:00 position, is a button called IF FIL
push it and watch your LCD display
you should see it bounce between A and B
set it to A filter.

now go to the knob called LO/WIDTH ( it's an outer silver colored coax knob)
crank it fully clockwise
this is now your wide filter

now select the B IF filter, and crack the knob to something narrow, I like 250-300hz for PSK
select this when the bands are crowded and you are trying to reject nearby strong stations and pick out a weak one.

the inner knob will set were you want the narrow filter.
DM-780 has a setting in options for 800hz, 100hz, and 1500hz.
match your 590 center to be the same, now you can hit that little green square button in 780 and it will automatically move your VFO to center that your
little yellow box is reading.

typically I  . .
run A ( wide)
hunt for a station
click on it ( yellow courser box in 780)
click on the CENTER FREQUENCY/green box button to center then to your filter
hit my B ( narrow filter )
work them

then hit A ( wide) filter and start hunting again

AGC-F ( fast)
no PROC
no NR
noBC

etc for DATA

the difference between DATA on and off is how your filters narrow

Thanks man, I'll try these settings & let you know.

Appreciate it!

Hi HS, Don't forget a filter has 2 specifications. One is the center frequency, e.g. "1500 Hz on the water" fall that we use for Olivia. The 2nd spec. is width, vary this from narrow to wide depending upon qrm. HTH

OK, that works better. I had filter A set too narrow. Got it except for the Center Freq. settings. In the DM780 options under waterfall? Is that where I set the center & check the "Enable Center Freq. Marker" button? Has 3 pre configured settings for 1000, 1500, & 2000.

That will show the little green marker along with the yellow on waterfall. I change it to match my narrow filter settings?
It doesn't seem to move to the yellow marker when I click it. Just says the center freq. must be set in options menu.

Thx again man,

HS

the green button adjusts your VFO to center up what you are listening to on the yellow courser

the knob on the kenwood called HI/SHIFT adjust the radios center filter freq

if you go narrow and start cranking it back and forth, you'll see your slice of receive bandwidth slide back and  forth on the waterfall

match the kenwood adjustment to the DM-780's

for PSK, most go with 1500hz,  or 1000hz

CW is 800hz

the green CENTER FREQUENCY button quickly moves your VFO so the station you are copying, is in the center of your (narrow) receive

let's say you're on 28.12000 psk.
both 590 and 780 filters at 1500hz

you see a station on waterfall at 2000hz.
click your mouse on him. ( yellow box on dm780)

now hit the green ( center freq) button.

your VFO just jumped to 28.120.5 and he's right at 1500hz on the waterfall now.

hit IF FIL to select your narrow, and you'll have him in the middle of your narrow receive
...rejecting all the other noise.

It's easier to show you than try to type ( and read ) all this.

yes,...in DM-780 options, enable " center frequency marker"
and select 1500hz for psk.

now set the 590 on DATA and adjust your HI/SHIFT knob to 1500

OK got it now Derek45! Thanks a heap for your help.

10m & 20m are going nuts today for psk31 traffic. Have seen more activity today than all week.

Take care,

This is what I like about the Arfcom ham forum... straight and helpful answers to straight questions.  On many other ham forums some guy will ask a reasonable question and is challenged with, "Where'd you get your license?  From a crackerjack box?  You're a ham, you should know this."  Or grumpings about "incentive licensing" (Jeeeze!  It's been 50 years, let that rest!), eliminating the code requirement, and the best, "I had to take the train 5 hours to take the test at the FCC office in New York and... ".

All that gets very tiresome.  Just answer the damn question, why don't you?

Well, this forum there are lots of helping hands.

Salute!  I'm honored to be here.

I don't know what you are talking about. OP clearly bought a radio way out of his league and experience level.

OP send the TS-590 to me for proper operation.

These digital modes require some tweaking for sure, but fun as all get out! Yeah, I'm slow, but sure.  Your welcome to stop by & use my rig anytime. But it stays right here
