I'm looking to get a headset for a HT.  I'm hoping to use it for 2 different HT's but don't know if it will fit.  The radio's I want to use it w/ are Wouxun KG-UV-6D and a Midland Nautico.  So basically I'm wondering how standard are the jacks in HT's?  Are they the same for all HT's or do different brands have different jacks?  TIA.

ETA:  I know the basic jack is the same, but I have seen some headsets list a measurement taken between the mic and speaker prongs.  That is what has me wondering if there is a difference between brands.

do you have a 'shoulder mic' for the Wouxun-you should, it makes it much easier to use? (about 8 bux on Amazon)

Can you plug it into the other radio-If so does it work as it should? if it does then the other is compatible with most everything for a Kenwood HT
(Wouxun and most other Chinese HT's use the KW pattern, 2 pin mic/speakers)

ETA: Reading this makes me think the KW and Midland are just different enough not to work together?

I should have given the full story in the first post.  As I mentioned in the other thread I work security on the side.  Their primary radio is a Midland Nautico.  The headsets they give us are not comfortable to me and I spent all last night fighting w/ it.  I plan on getting Wouxun KG-UV-6D in the future but need a headset now.  I was hoping to find one that would fit both the Wouxun and Midland radios so I don't have to buy another when I get the Wouxun.  I'm reading over the thread you linked now.  Thanks for the help.

Why?  Maybe I am thinking of the wrong radio but I know it is a Midland.

that's a VHF Marine radio - if they're using it they shouldn't be (unless talking to/from/between boats)

Until I came to this forum I had never heard that.  I'm not saying I don't believe you because I can understand why it would be that way.  There are a lot of hunters in my area that are using VHF.  I see a lot of marine Shakespeare antennas and dog boxes on trucks around here.  I don't think most are intentionally doing something wrong, I just think they don't know.

I haven't been able to find out anything about jack sizes for the Midland, but I do know this:
many radios share the same size holes, only thing different is spacing between them. Radio Shack sells a 'universal' headset that puts the two plugs on pigtails long enough to overcome this. It's not bad fit earwise, but I think it's a tad pricey at around $19 given you can buy OEM for less than $10.

When I was living in NC I kept marine freqs in my wouxon for kayaking. I was surprised to hear people on them when I was scanning and back in OK.

Can someone please cite the law that makes this illegal (using marine bands on land)?  Again, I am not saying I don't believe I just want a reference for when I talk to people about it.  While I'm waiting for someone to post it I will be looking for myself (and have been, but I'm not having any luck).  TIA.

here is an ex of someone getting their teeth kicked in by the FCC for 'doing it'
actual law/section or whatever is listed therein

And that example is just an individual. A business would face it worst. Your company can get their own license for VHF same way a taxi service does.

There are different setups for headsets/speaker mics, and you likely have different ones.  The Wouxun and most of the other Chinese radios follow the Kenwood pattern.  Most Midlands I have seen follow the Icom/old Yaesu pattern.   Motorola has one of their own also.

As previously stated, STAY AWAY from bootlegging on marine frequencies, bad idea.

Thanks a lot for the info gcw.  Gathering info is what I have been doing and the next time I go in I will bring it w/ me to discuss w/ them.  I'm not sure they are using marine band HT's, but if they are I will bring up the things I have learned here.  If they are using the wrong HT's I am sure it is by accident and not intentional.  As I've mentioned before, until I came to this forum I had no idea you couldn't use marine bands on land.  Until recently I really didn't know much about radio comm's.  I've used radio's most of my life starting w/ the toys you get as a kid.  As I got older I progressed and branched out.  In HS I had a CB w/ all the fun stuff.  Of course you hear this and that about certain parts are illegal but everyone has them and all the truck stops sell them so I didn't believe.  Now that I have more understanding of the overall field I can see why the parts are so available and the reasons they are illegal (some under certain circumstances).  Hopefully I can pass on the knowledge that has been passed on to me.

Thanks for the court case link.  I have printed it out and it will be w/ me next time I go in.  I don't want to falsely accuse someone, due to my ignorance, of doing something they are not, so I am going to say again that I don't know for sure that they are using marine band radios.  I could be mistaken and this is all for nothing.  But I will check into it and bring up the legality issues to them if they are.

Dang, why can't there be an industry standard.  (I know why, that statement is mostly complaining and rhetorical).  Thanks for the info.  I guess it will be better to go ahead and buy my own rig so I know it will work.
