OK, I got a fair grip on PSK31 now & me like-ee!   I want to try some more modes this weekend & seems JT65 is very popular. I'm assuming everyone uses JT65-HF software since HRD doesn't show the JT65 mode, unless I missed it.

What do I need to know to get started & does the JT65-HF have a way to auto log contacts & upload them built in?

Any help for a noob greatly appreciated,

HS

JT65HF works great. Easy to config.

I would also recommend WSJT-X, as it supports both jt65 and JT9. http://www.physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx.html

Cool, thx guys. I'm reading up on it now. I see it has a logging function built in. Radio set up is the easy part, learning to navigate the software is more of a chore.

Hope to catch you on JT65 soon.

Take care,

Just remember that it is such a slow mode, you will have plenty of time to figure out the next step in the QSO before it it your turn to transmit again!

My problem is I get sidetracked in that timeframe, and forget to change the message. lol...

That's not necessarily true, you have about a 10 second window to see if you need to repeat your last transmission or proceed to the next one, it just happens to take 110 seconds between those windows.

Also be sure your computers clock is synched to a known good time server or you won't be able to decode messages and noone will  be able to decode yours.

WSJT-X is the software that I use. JT-65HF is no longer being supported by its author.

WSJT-X page

WSJT-X is easy to use and will allow rig control and  when used with JT Alert it will automate your logging once set up properly. I am using WSJT-X  v1.1, r3496, as it is a stable release with no bugs. There is a beta version listed also, but I have not used it much to make a comment about it.

I highly recommend downloading and using JT Alert with WSJT-X.  JT Alert

JT Alert has a number of really cool features and will help you see who is on the air and if you have worked them before. It also helps you keep track of DXCC, WAS, etc.  I highly recommend downloading and using it.

I wish there was something like JTAlert for linux.  Does anyone know, is the linux version of WSJT-X a gui only?  If there was a command line version I could pretty simply write my own version of JTAlert.

there are a few txt files it pipes stuff to.

all.txt is the main one. I thought about using sed and awk on it but my foo skills are not that strong yet. let me know if I can help.

Excellent thread HS.....

In trying to get a handle on JT65/JT9 I am correct in the assumption on the flow of a QSO:

1) you see a CQ message. The decode happens between the 50 sec and 1 min mark. Since the calling station will be listening in the next min, you have about 5 secs to click on the line and send the response message.

2) You send the HISCALL YOURCALL YOURGrid response.

3) Here's where I'm hazy. He either answers or doesn't. Do you send #2 again?

Etc......

[#16]
me- drinking coffee see cq from new grid
me- double click, wsjtx sets---- you me grid and transmits at the minute mark
you- see my grid and send signal report
me- see signal report and respond with signal report
you- see my signal report and either send rrr or 73
me- see your rrr or 73 and send 73

If they don't respond to your grid you can usually see if they are talking to someone else.

transmission take from minute to minute:50 so you have 10 seconds to choose what you want to do.

I have been playing with a few things to make a simple script that might help you. In the end I thing I am going to do something in python and use it as a plugin for weechat

grep -q CQ .wsjtx/ALL.TXT > .wsjtx/cq_calls.txt

xmessage -buttons 'Ok' -file .wsjtx/cq_calls.txt

So what's everyone's farthest QSO on JT modes?

I have never reeled in any rare DX personally. But have worked lots of states on 160m.

Japan or Russia. I've never been able to get Japan. But I can get it almost 100% every time with one of the JT modes, 17m or 15m.

Do you listen to the "Chatting with the designers" webcast?
I know a coupla months ago they were doing something about making an arduino based time reader for WWV
Chatting with the Designers
I'm interested in this too because I want to have at least one computer in my shack that's isolated from the internets.

GPS is another option for time sync if you don't have net access.

Is here a way to do that without buying a Trembel Thinderbolt?  Any GPS units have a 10mhz reference out?

I believe you can sync on the NMEA data from any GPS, if you're okay with being a few milliseconds off for latency.  Isn't that close enough for JT65?

Antarctica, Russia, Australia are pretty far for me

South Africa - 10,532 miles
Antarctica  - 10,807 miles

I put the distance in because I live on the West coast, so my DX tends to be different than most in this forum.  For instance, I have 61 Japan JT65 contacts in the last 5 months, but they are right across the water from me - about 4,500 miles.

While it is fun to install GPS, WWV, NTP and other timing mechanisms on your PC, none of them are really required for JT65, which will quite happily run as long as time is set with approximately +/-1 second accuracy, which is actually quite undemanding and easy to do. You can listen to WWV on your radio and simply adjust it manually and achieve that. In a pinch I've even just watched the waterfall and set my PC clock by watching the time other JT65 transmissions start!

But yes, it can be fun to fool with GPS time standards and whatnot.

Seems my dipole may be somewhat directional. I get strong signals from the south & west, but I don't catch much at all to the East. However, the last 2 evenings at roughly the same time 9:00pm EST, the Northwest opens up. I see a bunch of CA, WA, OR, & into Canada. I saw an Alaska call come across with a prety good signal, but I couldn't reach him. It opens on 20m & 40m. May have to string me up a wire running the opposite direction sometime. Or catch them on the long path. I aint gonna sweat it, as we all know conditions could change in an instant.

Even with wire at a good height, it is facing somewhat south with rising elevation behind it, so it doesn't surprise me its a little directional. Might help when all the leaves fall off.
