My call sign just went up on the ULS today.  I've been meaning to get licensed for years now, but never made the time to make it happen. About 2 weeks ago I saw that there was an upcoming Hamfest in Virginia Beach and I set that date 09/14/13 as the day I would take my test. I studied for about an hour a night when work was slow, and this past weekend I aced the Tech & General tests. Not so much for the Extra. 
The studying hasn't stopped yet. The next test session for Extra is on 10/04/13 and I've already scheduled an unpaid personal day at work to make it happen. I guess having that extra motivation can't hurt!

Edited to add I'm in Newport News and we've got some great clubs on the peninsula. If you're interested I'd love to have another arfcommer among the ranks. |

I'm definitely interested. I don't have any gear yet though, still trying to make my mind up. I'm thinking of an FT-60R just to have something to play with until tax time. Then I plan on investing in something nice from Elecraft. |

hope to catch you on the air soon! Thanks! Yeah, my dad retired from Bell Atlantic about 3 months after I got my foot in the door back in the late 90's. Did the outside plant thing for 2 years, then took a promotion to switching. We don't just work on switches anymore, but the 5ESS was my first introduction to the Central Office.

Welcome to the ULS, switchman! Easier than a 5ESS or DMS-100, eh? :) Yes indeed, or my favorite the EWSD. Too bad these old Class 5 switches are being replaced with IP based soft switches. Heck, we just got rid of our last 1A electromechanical switch earlier this year.
