Is there anyone here in the DFW Metroplex willing to mentor a noob into the ways of the Ham? Likely can be done via phone, email, etc. Please IM or email me if you're willing to help. Thanks in advance, 44

I'm not in that area very often... but, here's a local club for ya:  http://www.w5fc.org/

That's usually a great way to get started.  The big Rochester club (Rochesterham.org) has licensing classes for all levels, and there are usually plenty of elmers to help out.

Most questions can be answered here.   Don't feel shy!    The guys here are pretty helpful at getting folks pointed in the right direction.

Welcome, and congratulations on deciding to take a step in to another hobby responsible for ensuring financial ruin and odd looks!  First lesson, we end our transmissions with 73, not 44!

OP UPDATE
Hi all. Well I just got my Technician Class book (Gordon West) and can hardly keep my nose out of it at work. I plan to read it C to C and take notes from which my questions to the thread will come from. Thanks in advance for the help and support received, and to be received. I really think I'm going to enjoy this new hobby, and it couldn't come at a better time. With all of the Obutzit, (Weiner)Holder, Lerner yadda x 10,000 bullshit going on , it will be a distraction that has the added benefit of helping with my preps!! Win all around.  73,  44.

Welcome to our crazy world!

You can find practice tests here: http://qrz.com/hamtest/. Try to do more than just memorize the answers, read and learn the theory behind the questions. It'll make the study much more meaningful and even actually easier.

Also, start working toward your General Class also. You'll find it will expand your horizons far beyond what is available with the Technician license. If you quickly find yourself breezing through the practice exams, go ahead and expand your study into the General Class exams, then nail both classes at one time. Many do it.

This is a good practice site

When you get an answer wrong, it keeps bringing it back up t beat the correct answer into your head.

Thanks for all of your responses. I will check out the hamtest site this weekend. I'm already getting that giddy feeling I get when I sense large amounts of cash leaving my wallet.  73   44.

Welcome to the madness 44

I've only been into ham radio since 2009 so I'm still fairly new. Back when I was getting started the folks here armed me with everything I needed to know-from where to find the right study guides to what gear to buy in order to get a good start.

You are in very good hands here, and if your experience is anything like mine you will be on the air before you know it

Online youtube classes for the technician class license.  Worked for me along with several different practice exam sites like hamexam.org and qrz.com
