so whats the deal with it? does anybody even really know what its for?

No one really knows for sure, but it's likely present so the Rooskies "own" the frequency,
and there is very reasonable speculation it may be part of a dead man's network. (ie if it isn't heard in X days, it triggers a battle plan, like how the UK has their nuclear subs authorized to launch if they can't get the BBC for two weeks.) |

There was activity on it over the winter besides the buzzer... There were voices reading normal numbers station codes and a bit more... and the next day you could hear people speaking Russian in the background of the buzzer.
The activity was updated to the wiki page but strangely deleted a few days later
eta: I have been an SWL much longer than I have been a ham, and numbers stations have always been of interest to me |
