Hung out with an elmer for a couple hours yesterday. He showed me his ARES setup and everything. He mentioned keeping an old piece of water hose to put over coax if you have to route through a doorway, which was a great tip. I wouldn't of thought of that until my coax got messed up once. It made me wonder what other nuggets of wisdom are out there that you could share with us newer operators.
I'm planning my setup right now so I've been doing a lot of research & stuff... just need some $... HAHAHA! |

you probably know about this thread, http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_22/648273_The_EMCOMM_Box.html and you should DEFINITELY read this thread (not only for the humor!), http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_22/627490_.html and finally i have one actual tip: measure and then write down the actual operating currents of the radios in your EMCOMM box. this info can help you judge how long a "foreign" power source (like a borrowed battery) will last. see http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_22/593963_.html ar-jedi |

This was a learning experience! http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_22/627490_.html and finally i have one actual tip: measure and then write down the actual operating currents of the radios in your EMCOMM box. this info can help you judge how long a "foreign" power source (like a borrowed battery) will last. AMEN! See pic below. see http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_10_22/593963_.html ar-jedi It took me a while to understand what the "HF 450mA" label on your Emcomm Box referred to. "Sokath, his eyes uncovered!" (meant as a metaphor to comprehension)

http://home.comcast.net/~gregbell/IC-703+ Receive Current.jpg that is a nice man-purse you got there. ps as you probably know you can kill off some features on the 703+ to further reduce operating current. for example, there is a menu item to turn OFF the LCD backlight -- that will knock 30-50mA off right there. ar-jedi |
