So with the sale of most of my current station complete, I still have my Yaesu speaker. What other good alternatives are there out there? I am not against keeping my SP-2000 it sounds good, but since the K3 can use diversity RX (with the 2nd RX installed) I am not sure I want to buy a second one when I finally get the subRX.

I want options gents!

Any RF feedback issues?

Probably depends on the radio/speaker combo.  I use built in speaker or headphones so they're never hooked up directly to the radio, but the computer and speakers are just inches away.

My IC-706 that I had would put RF into the speakers, while the 857d doesn't...

I wrapped all the excess audio line around a scrap ferrite bar that I had lying around, no issues.

RFI is always on my mind since I run legal limit.

Best audio ever was with this, but it doesn't fit on the desk:

I've toyed with the idea of making some kind of enclosure for the Weber 8" alnico speaker but it would still be too big.  I use a small bookshelf stereo speaker now.

I'm curious about this, myself.  I've just been using the built in speaker so far.  It's OK, but has it's limitations. I've done a little research, but am still totally undecided.  I'd like something that is good for CW, as well as SSB.

If you don't care about intermingling brands the SP-2000 is a great speaker once you put poly-fill inside the case. I just don't know if I want to buy two of them when I get the SubRX

Yeah, I don't know what to do.  I'd like something better than the standard speaker  but I don't want to spend a fortune, either.  There are other things I would rather spend the money on first.

On a side note, I managed to get Belarus on 15m CW, today.  The QSO was more than the standard "599 TU", and he was going a little fast for me.  I made a few mistakes, but I managed to muddle through it. Just finished filling out the QSL card.

I'm using a Yaesu SP-8 with my base station. I bought it to match the looks of my Ft-1000. It was filled with acoustic filler, about 30% of total volume. It sounds terrific!
Take a look a small Kenwood mobile speakers, model # SP-50B. It's small in size and does not have enough volume for a mobile station. But it sounds very pleasant at lower volume settings. It will do great with CW.

The only QSOs I have with Belarus is EV1R on a few bands. I think they are all from 2011.  In my radio with draw time I am going to be filling out a lot of cards I have neglected to send for.

Picked up a pair for $16 at a hamfest. Use for amateur radio and P25 scanner monitoring.

I've found that the audio level of the radio(s) can be lowered without a loss in intelligibility of the spoken word. Listening fatigue is considerably reduced during long sessions of radio work as a result.

My favorite speaker for HF SSB/CW was put together with parts purchased from (IIRC) Parts Express at a long-ago Dayton Hamvention.  Something like a 6 1/2" poly cone midbass driver (with shielded magnet) in a small shelf size box.  Wonderful smooth sound for SSB or AM listening, but too bassey for FM.  I have a salvaged 8" speaker I've tried out in an improvised enclosure which sounded really nice, but need to find or make a real box for it.  Bigger seems to be better when it comes to HF SSB at least IME.

The 8" speaker in my Champ clone spoiled me.  Never heard anything quite as nice as that for a radio speaker.  I might try to mount it on the wall, the only problem is that it's so big on the desk.

Good Topic.
Had an old Heathkit ext. speaker, can't remember model.
Sounded SO nice.
Shame to spend WAY over a grand on an xcvr with a $3.00 speaker in it.

No, I mean the cheap speakers on OEM equipment.
Why else would one want a better speaker?

I knew what you meant.  I have the matching speaker for my FT-2000 still the SP-2000.  It unfortunately is a $10 speaker in a $150 enclosure.  I am tired of all the BS speakers radio manufacturers have come out with.

I tried a pair of "bookshelf" stereo speakers with my K3 the other day.  Didn't like the way they sounded.  They are OK with music, but not much good with speaking voices (SSB), even after playing around with the equalizer.  I didn't really care for the simulated "stereo" sound either.  Unplugged them, and went back to using the stock speaker.

Those are generally never worth the money.  A decent 8" midbass driver in a cheap wall baffle box would beat any factory speaker I've heard, for probably $40-50.  Remember that the audio response on SSB only goes up to roughly 2.4kHz.

THe problem is when I get the dual receivers for the K3, I'll need 2 and that gets expensive.

Speakers.
Does anyone here have one of the speakers which I posted in the link?
Sounds, ha-ha, like good stuff.

Do you want two separate boxes or just one?

Probably two separate but open to any ideas that preferably come in under $200
