Got my VE certificate and badge in yesterday.  I have four or five personal friends who have expressed interest in getting their license, so this is another way to push them into getting into HAM. We used to have to sit down and wrangle through 3 other VE's schedules to find a good time to give tests, but now that another club member and I got VE'd then it should be a little easier to find someone to proctor the test. Any input from you guys who have been doing this a while?

Good for you!

I'm hoping my credentials come in later in the month.

I'm all ears on the comments as well.

Have you thought about asking your club if they can pick a day a month to offer VE testing? My club picked the 3rd Sunday of the month to offer testing. It works great for us. Sometimes we also offer testing before our twice a month meetings. So that can be an option for you too.

While 3 VE's can get together and hold a session, I highly recommend that you hook up with an existing team and learn the ropes.  It isn't hard, but everything must be done exactly correct or the tests might get rejected.  Our team now holds sessions every other month at a local American Legion.  Fortunately for us, the post commander is a ham.

OP,

Did you get your ARRL VE or the W5YI?

Congrats.

Congrats.

Never mind the awards and contests. The best satisfaction I get from amateur radio is being a VE. Seeing the face of a new ham or a guy who has studied his ass off to upgrade as he looks over his new CSCE is worth its weight in gold.

W5Y1. The chief VE is the one who sponsored me. He proctored MY tech and general tests. I am just trying to help out any way I can, and to help get some new guys into this fun hobby and prep wise, open a few peoples' eyes as to the indispensable benefits in an emergency. On a side note-I had a good talk with the spousal unit about getting her general to get more HF privileges. I know I can proctor her test, but we still have some 'spare' VE's

Congrats I would go ahead and get your ARRL certs as well but then again that could just be because I carry both.

Any advantages to having both, or it just a 'get both' thing?

I was one long ago

I would say get with an existing team and have them show you the way to do it.

Mostly a "Get Both" thing but I do help with both sets of tests from time to time.

Welcome to the VE team!!
In my area the ARRL is pretty much the group running tests.
Their VE manual is very straightforward and easy to understand.
I strongly recommend joining an existing team to learn the ropes.
I've been a VE for several years & have 16 (i think) sessions behind me.
It takes awhile to get the gist of the paperwork and as said earlier.. it's got to be right or it gets kicked back for you to straighten out.
best luck & 73
