I just got another UV-5R as a Christmas present and am now having trouble programming it.  I can program my old one just fine with both CHIRP and the Baofeng software.  I can get the new one to download to CHIRP, but cannot get it to upload new content.  It will not do either with the Baofeng software.  It says it cannot communicate with the tranceiver.  I've checked and rechecked and I'm sure I have the COM port set right.  Does anyone know any reason that one will program and the other will not?

As a guess, updated firmware in the new radio needs new software versions to program.

Clearly you have opened your present before Christmas and Baby Jesus is teaching you a lesson.

Try cloning the new radio, opening up the image you want to use, copying all of the channels over to the cloned (at this point unsaved) channel sheet and then uploading it to the radio. Should work. Sounds like your other radio(s) use the older firmware and your new one uses the 2012 and later firmware. All of this is done in chirp btw.

Got one in november and couldn't get it to program
with the software on disk that cane with the
programming cable different firmware requires
different software try this link for more info

An upgrade of my CHIRP software seems to have taken care of the problem.  Thanks folks.

It is time consuming, but you can program the radio by hand. That is what I did with mine.

I got one from Main Trading yesterday. It's pretty awesome, but the number "4" key doesn't work. Pretty crutial for a UHF radio.

Did yours come with a 3800 mAh battery or the 1800 mAh one?

Still trying to figure out the different versions and prices.

Mine came with the 1800 and it's been on quite a bit since I charged it. I left it on all night while I slept, twice now.

Still no 4 button, probably gonna apply that money to a mobile.

I took the plunge and ordered a UV-5RA and a programming cable.

Did you call them and tell them? I would think Richard would replace it.

Richard has a 90 day warranty, but his shop is closed this week. I'm sure he'll take care of it when he gets back. No slant on Richard, I've just heard the build quality was off on these things, looks like it's true.

I did too.  I ordered it yesterday using Amazon Prime and I just waiting for it to be delivered.

Mine arrived today from amazon.

Have not yet received the USB programming cable.

This thing is tiny!

I got mine on 12/27/12.  The only other HT that I own is a Alinco DJ-180 and It's barely bigger that the Alinco minus the battery pack.
I got a programming cable with it and it doesn't like my Dell.  It will not install and programming it by the keypad is "counter intuitive".

And that putting it nicely.

Some of the amazon comments claim that some of the programming cables are either using counterfeit chips or chips that require a non-standard driver.

It's all very, um, bizarre and mysterious.

Go to miklor.com and you'll find an explanation about the chips in the programming cables and which driver you need to make them work correctly.  Its just a slightly older driver thats free from the original chip manufacturer.

This is silly, but make sure you push the plug in hard. Sometimes it is hard to do the first few times. Some people have to trim the plug.

^^^^^^^^
This.

I had a tough time at first getting everything to communicate, but once you get the right software, drivers, and comm port, you are in business.

I went to that site and download the recommended file.  Wish me luck!

Im running the 3.2 Linux kernel and I have never had a problem with serial adapters (kernel wise, I did have a human error once)

Well, I got it to work!

That sure does make it easier to program.  Using the keypad was a pain in the, well you know.

These radios are really designed and type approved for LMR use, despite amateurs being mostly who are buying them.

LMR radios are not allowed to be readily keyboard programmable for type acceptance.  They're skirting the line with what they have now which IIRC is a code you enter to get into programming mode.  In any event they are designed to be programmed via computer.

just got the same radio too
but ive never programmed one so it looks confusing
waiting on usb cord

only want to program in important things like local repeaters
and keep it only for emergencies to communicate with friends
use the frs channels when in range

I have huge lists of local repeaters and get some chatter on some of them so at least I know it can receive

I have an old scanner that I can pick up police and fire with it using trunk or something
cant remember programmed it a couple years ago so thats good to have too as this little radio doesnt get those frequencies
12/31/2012 5:19:49 PM EDT
[#25]
got a question on programming

so I have a repeater frequency that has a - after it
next is a pl which is 100

so from a video I saw on you tube how to manually program it

I go into frequency mode
type in the frequency

then in menu select #25 sft-d   I select -

then in menu #13 T-CTCS???  Im hoping thats the correct menu number
so I select 100 since thats the pl

exit menu
push * and I get 2 different frequencies which seems correct
one is for transmit and one is to receive    of course I have no idea if that is correct
then I set the memory channel, exit and push * and reset memory channel
I guess that remembers both thats the only thing I could figure from the you tube video I saw

does this seem correct only place I was confused on was menu #13
or if I missed any steps

was using this page too  http://www.w4qr.org/files/repeater-basics_jon-perelstein.pdf

had no luck
my friend has same radio too and he is closer to the repeater and I could not pick up anything on my scanner
so I must have something programmed wrong
12/31/2012 8:19:55 PM EDT
[#26]
never mind
got it working
had the wrong offset

works great as the repeater is very far too

See if that info helps, it's a different radio but the information is the same.

I have never been so aggrevated with a radio.

The owners manual just plain sucks

Just get the usb cable and download Chirp or the Baofeng software.  It's the only way to fly.

Miklor's website is the best place to find info programming them. It's easy once you get the hang of it and don't forget about the extra step involved (since the TX freq doesn't program in with the RX freq when your dealing with repeaters) but it's still far easier to program through chirp.

I used chirp
it filled the memory with local stations, it has a menu in chirp to do that
really simple
too bad I had about 30 I typed in by hand until I found that menu
