There was a great article in this month's QST about 5 Band Worked All States.  As my DXing becomes harder and harder, now that I am in the high 180's for countries worked and 170's for confirmed, I think I will try to make this my next goal.  So when there is no DX that I need on any band that I can hear ( a common thing now) I will work on this.  Anyone else want to try and make this a sprint?

Lets see who we can get involved for ARFCOM glory!!!!  I know some of us can get this thing banged out in a year

I wish I had time to play this year. I already have 2BWAS and Triple Play (#229). Unfortunately, I don't think I can get enough chair time over the next few months to make much headway.

Good luck!

I am hope we can get some interest.  I always like a friendly competition.

I think it's going to be a challenge for me to get WAS on all bands combined.  The lower 48 shouldn't be too bad, but I'm skeptical about Alaska and Hawaii.

I heard a QSO yesterday, between a station in North Dakota, and another station in Rhode Island.  I need them both, but I thought breaking in would be rude, so I didn't.  I'll get them eventually.

I have HI on 10-80 even Wrk bands.  I need AK on 80m but have it on 160 so I am not too worried.  VT is the one that concerns me. I only have it on 20 and 160

My problem, is that I can't hear Alaska and Hawaii.   It might be possible if the propagation is really great one day, but under "normal" circumstances, I just can't hear them.

Sorry OM, the competition is over, I already won.  I have my 5BWAS and a WAS on SIX meters, nearly there on 160 and two meters as well.

Success is available to those who have studied propagation and utilize all modes of it.  It also helps to operate CW.

Good luck on your quest, it is much fun and much frustration at times.  SASEs are very helpful when QSLing as well as late evening 10 & 15 meter operation during the Es season.  Enough of the helpful hints, you should be on the radio searching for the next one.

And the digi modes. JT65-HF also.

Working in the 5BWAS direction. Also working toward working each band by phone, CW, and digi.

Will keep me out of the bars for a while.

In the meantime work toward Triple Play Award. Work the 50 states on phone, CW, and digi. Mixed bands and mixed modes on digi. All have to be QSL'd by LoTW. I did it in about 6 months. TPA #664.

My goal was a basic WAS and  a DXCC.

While I have the WAS, I need a SHITLOAD of confirmations for my DXCC even though I already have them all.

Hank Ellis was right when he referred to WAS as being WAS 5 times. I think it is going to be a long time before I can confirm 100 DX entities.

DXCC 5 times sounds about right.

Actually I think it was WAS Twice Over. But I get your drift.

My goal at the very beginning was to someday get basic WAS. DX? Oh that was for the guys with towers, amps, and big aluminium in the air. Hell I got WAS in less than a year without really trying. Triple Play Award and DXCC in two years. Applying for DXCC Digital endorsement on the next application cycle. 20m WAS is done. 40m is just a handfull away. Rest I'm sitting at around 35 states and chipping away at it. Don't sell yourself and your station short. Most limitations are due to the space between the headphone earcups.

BIG issue is with domestic QSLs. Tough enough to work all 50 states in whatever band/mode/mix you're doing, but having to do some states two, three, or more times because a few dufus' don't want to take the time to QSL you is frustrating. As I tell people. "You are the wanted entity to somebody. Be prepared to QSL with that guy in the manner he needs."

DX on the other hand I've had very good luck with. Just be prepared for a long wait for some. 6 months is not out of the ordinary. Sure you run a good chance of your mail getting pilfered going to Russia and most of the 'stan countries. South America can be iffy depending on the country. Biggie is to do it right. Get on LoTW if you are not. Second, educate yourself on direct QSL. Lots of little tidbits of tips on international mail. Use IRC if possible. Use #6 1/2 envelopes. #10 will get rejected. Follow the QSL instructions and routing through the DXs page on QRZ.com. Don't be afraid to send a second card if the first one doesn't come back in 6 or 9 months. That kind of thing.

Pic, have you thought about doing LoTW?

That's really the fun part of Dxing figuring out how to get money and a card to some distant part of the world where the $2 you send with your card might just be more than the letter carriers daily or weekly salary.  That is where LoTW and Clublog's OQRS via paypal is so nice.  Yea I hate paypal like the rest of us, but being able to pay and get a receipt for a card via the web is kinda sweet.

Think positive

I started out in '93 with 10 meters and quickly got Alaska and Hawaii

back then, all I had was a 25watt mobile and a whip.

nothing hard about either.

This.

AK and HI on the upper bands isn't tough at all. Crunch the path through propagation prediction software to find the best band and time to get on and watch the DX spots.

ETA: Chasing this WAS stuff you run into things you never thought of. Like why is DE such a hard state to nail? I know there are other hams in my state. I've met them. Then how come I can't get a 15m CW contact with one. Through it all you do learn real world, practical information on band usage, propagation, and modes. Good stuff to know if/when the SHTF and you really need to get the word out.
