I ordered up one last night Thanks for the info |

Yaesu 2900R - $125
I personally like the ability to go down to 5W, which the TM-281 doesn't provide. |

Nevermind my above post. 2900R - $119 Quoted:

We were once comparing two radios switching them to the same antenna. One was an Icom 7600 and the other one - FTDX5000. Yaesu's receiver is light years ahead in performance. And controls are so much easier to operate. No menus to constantly mess around with. Great ergonomics. YOU NEED ONE! |

I hear that the 5000 is even better. I can't see how but I would like to find out |

I work near HRO. Went down on Wed. afternoon asking them to price match gigaparts $355 for a Kenwood TM-V71a. HRO wanted $370 and wouldn't budge even after I said I wanted a TM-281 also. And they don't have to pay for shipping. So I got the 281 and walked out. Went on gigaparts Thanksgiving morning planning on buying the V71 but checked back with HRO before I made the purchase and here they added it to the sales list for $350. So I ordered it from them. They lost $5.00 plus the cost of shipping and almost lost a sale. Good for me, bad for them.

A $70 rebate popped up for the Yaesu 8800R.
http://www.hamradio.com/detail.cfm?pid=H0-006755 Decided to grab one. Already have this radio in one vehicle, so might as well get the same unit so I don't have to learn a second radio, and can use the same programming software for both. |

Thanks to this stinking thread I just ordered a Kenwood TM-281 and a Yaesu VX-8GR. Needed a mobile and the 8GR will be a backup to my 8DR (that I love!).
ETA- looks like they are running low on the Kenwood deal. If you want one at that rediculously low price, I'd jump. |

Thanks everyone, I had done plenty of research and felt the 590 would be the best radio to start with regarding setting up for digital modes unlike many other radios and it would allow for years of use before needing to upgrade to another radio.
I could have gotten a lesser espensive radio but I would probably be wanting to upgrade to another radio rather soon so I opted to buy once cry once and got the best radio I could afford at this time. |

Great price on a dual bander. I'll pass Quirky Chinese radios are only cute when they are significantly cheaper than the quality Japanese brands. I'll spend a bit more for a quality rig with a better reputation, ease of use, and resale value. |
