Before it get's brought up...I searched, found what I was looking for but it was archived and I wanted to ask questions.

The guy who originally got me into amateur radio, W5CDT, suggested I look into HSMM-MESH knowing my love for computers. I have to say, I have found a purpose for that old Linksys router sitting in my old router bin at home. Long story short, I was looking at maybe seeing if ARSAT might be interested in setting up a few nodes around the Texas Tech campus (I was thinking about using the network as a way to get some more interest in amateur radio from all of those EE majors who have to have their licenses for labs). I think it has some interesting potential, like to see how others have used the system.

Secondly, has anyone modified other routers (i.e. not WRT54G's) for HSMM-MESH nodes?

Good on you for trying to get more guys into it.

HSMM Mesh is cool. I have messed with it a little bit. HSMM has a little tighter hardware requirements than open/dd-wrt, and there is some interpretation as to type acceptance but all in all it is a good setup. I have studied it a little while and have a couple routers flashed for it as well as a satellite tv antenna I am planing on adapting so but I haven't done any test outside of my "lab"

Just wait until you start buying them used and you ask people on craigslist for the serial number so you can check the version of software. I have had some people accuse me of trying to hack them, everyone ask why and either says cool with a glazed over look or try to jack the price up.

Look local for the routers and don't spend more than $20 each

Hard to find them Locally here in Lubbock. I was playing with one I bought a few months ago (V8) and I accidentally bricked it yesterday and can't get it to recover (you win some, you loose some). What I've learned is that the WRT54G's with removable antennas are the general quick glance buy (I have one that is good to go that I replaced with a Time Capsule  at my parents house when we made the switch to N, may have the 54G that other 54G replaced as well, one has high-gain antennas on it). I've found one that will work locally, they just want to sell it in a package with a bunch of other G networking package. I'll have to look on craigslist in Austin when I drive down this week and see what I can't find.

I'd like to setup another mesh at the family retreat in Colorado. Be nice to have network access at the barn (which is 800 ft. from the house and doesn't have power) when I'm working on stuff over there with my dad plus a camera so I can keep an eye on the highway right there (it's known as dead man's curve for a reason, no fatalities since the redesign but a guy did have a heart attack going around it last year).

I have one of my EE friends in support of getting one up between our two houses here in Lubbock, but its just a matter of trying to convince what's left of ARSAT, which has technically been disbanded due to lack of interest (I was going to suggest this, but I also suggested interlinking with UT or A&M's amatuer clubs) to  to set one up and then promoting it to the EE guys.
