Is 9 too young, he is almost 10 and pretty brainy? Thanks |

| my 11 y/o nephew has shown some real interest of late. I currently have him reading The Road Home. at least it'll give a sense of what Ham Radio is. From there the ARRL study guides or Ham Test Online....we'll see |

Thanks all. We are on the Olympic peninsula so Bellevue is a little far Togo, thanks for the idea R32. We homeschool, I think I'll just buy some books a go at it. We have the time. HS dad here too, thinking of teaching CW as I learn myself, kinda like teaching knots or cooking-one of those skills that may pay off. the last ARRL Tech study guide I bought (long story) had a CD included that provided 'testing' ...it was like all the online services, and was a great help! |

The weird thing is that even though I took a long break from the hobby, retraining myself to copy CW was like getting back on a bike. Teach them young and they will know it for life. |

Give Green Mountain and Gold Mountain repeaters a try. You should have line of sight on those. I can easily hit them with my hand held radios from Ballard and also Toandos Peninsula to the West of you. I'M if you need freq info. |
