I just got license and just got a Yaesu FT-8900R. I plan on installing this in my Jeep, with a Rigrunner, unsure which model at this time. My question may seem like a fairly obvious one to most, but it isn't to me. I'm planning on using one of the quad band antennas (Diamond or Comet) for the install, with a permanent, non magnetic mount. My question is, should I have an arrestor connected on the feedline? Also, if you have any tips/tricks for the install, please don't be shy!
Thanks in advance, Zach |

I don't have an arrestor on either of my antennas.

any reason why you are going with a Rigrunner instead of just running the power and ground to the battery? I've got the 4005H in my truck. It's connected to the battery and gives me flexibility in powering other things. I did an install for a friend and mounted the antenna with a lip mount on the rear gate. Don't seem to have any pics of it, though, and she sold the Jeep. |

as far as mounting, i would mount it on one of the flat spots on the front finders and wouldnt worry about an arrestor. I should've mentioned it's an XJ, not a Wrangler based TJ/YJ,/CJ,etc. The antenna isn't a concern, I'm mounting it next to the hatch back on the passenger side, I've already fabricated the mounting bracket that is going to bolt above the tail light assembly there. Zach Doesn't sound like much of a ground plane. If you don't have a decent ground plane you need to look into antennas that can work reasonably well in that configuration. 6m and 10m are going to have to have a ground of some kind, but will work to a degree just with any connection to the vehicle body. Did you get a General class license, or plan to? Otherwise the 10m FM is useless. If you stick with 6m/2m/70cm there is a lower cost option for a triband antenna, or if you don't mind swapping antennas around there are tons of 2m/70cm dual banders and 6m/2m dual banders. If you're talking about a lightning surge suppressor they're generally pointless on a vehicle. |

I do understand the 10m FM may be useless, especially since it seems from what I've read that FM is rarely use on the 6&10m, unless there are nearby repeaters, which there are in my area for 6m. Thank you for your help. Zach |

If your plan is ultimately to end up with something like an FT-857d in there start with that, why put $500 into the 8900 if you are just going to upgrade it. The nice thing the real HF rig will give you is having 6m & 10m on a seperate jack from 2m & 70cm. You will also be able to use SSB on 6 (and all the other bands for that matter).
