My sons BS troop has decided to do a camp out the weekend of this(because of my advice). I have a FT-100D as most of you know. I also have a tuner to go along with it and my PAC-12 antenna. My question is what antenna would YOU use for this? So far I'm not 100% sure what the camp site looks like(not sure if there are trees or if its just a field). I have a 16ft AL painters pole that i can use to elevate a wire but with it being AL I'm not sure how well it will work. I want to try and keep it cheap since i will have to buy a new deep cell batter for this setup. Ideas?

If you're just camping out I'd just run a piece of wire. One of my buddies ran a wire at 6' while with the Scouts on a trip to NC and talked to Australia. Never quite know what the bands are gonna do.

Check out the camp site ahead of time, I'd recommend a ladder line fed dipole for the versatility. 73, Rob

Google Earth is your friend. It will at least show trees/no trees and elevation.

No love for the PAC-12 you already have?

i love it for setup here at the house, my concern while camping is the kids will be running all over hell and creation and could get tangled up in the ground plain wires. while the MFJ extendable antenna is somewhat stout i doubt it will take many knockdowns. i plan on taking it but would rather have something i can get up off the ground out of harms way.
