TS50 is the newest generation listed.

The TS-430/440s have a display dots problems.

The TS50 combo is a great setup, however an LDG tuner will get you more matching range. That's a good price considering the AT50 will probably bring $150 on QTH.

ts-50.   Great Rig!  I love mine.  And keep the AT-50.  It will most likely work better than anything you buy that says LDG on it.

I've got a TS50 and LDG Z100 Tuner.  Great Pkg! though  I'd like a KW tuner to match!

the 718 would be my 2nd choice, maybe my first if I were to do over-that said I've never used the 718, but it has a few bells I think would come in handy.

The TS50 is stupid simple to use and has proven itself this first year of Ham for SCW!

Most of the ts-50 radios are getting pretty long in the tooth. Look at the 718 option. I seen a couple at hamfests going for under 500 locally.

The IC-718 is my first choice if I can find one for around $500. People are asking ridiculous amounts of money for these things used. I can't believe they went up in price so much, they were $600 NEW less than a year ago!

ETA: I did see one on QRZ the other day for $465 but never received a reply from the guy.

I've got two of these setups.  Icom 718, LDG IT-100, and Samlex SEC-1223 power supply.  One is up at the club station, having been replaced with a Ten-Tec Jupiter here in the shack.  The other is mounted in a Pelican case for Field Day, emergency, portable use.  The 718 works well, and is very easy to operate.  I've even done a "quick start" guide (will be glad to email a copy) that is kept by the 718 station up at the club radio room.  I've quite literally talked around the world with these rigs.

Looking at 2- 718's, one has the mars upgrade, the other has no mods for the same price. Which one should I go with? I've been playing hell getting people to answer emails!
Thnx

Which ever one is in better condition (or includes a better mix of accessories).

Doing the "MARS Upgrade" is quick and simple - shouldn't have any effect on the asking price.

I think what AFM was getting at is that a non-MARS modded rig is unmolested and more likely to work as it should. Its not rocket science doing a MARS mod, but many hams have no business mucking around inside their rigs.

That's what I thought, I didn't know whether the mod was intrusive or just a plug in chip or what. Thanks

It involves removing 3 diodes from a PC board.

No cutting or hacking required.

Takes all of 30 seconds, after the radio enclosure is opened.

That's what I was getting at.

I'm not that against modding the radio, but if it is to be, I want to be the one to do it.

If all else is equal...get the modded one. For SHTF I'd want the freq agility.

The only problem with mods is that unless done by the factory or at a factory authorized service center...it voids the warranty. Of  course buying used negates most warranties anyway.

Most mods only require clipping a diode or two. Pretty simple.
