I mentioned to teh pack leader that I am a ham and he asked me to run a demo for the Weblos (4th graders) on the next campout(March)
Well Usually on campouts I run the 817 but don't want to do that for scouts. I now have the motivation to finish my Go kit with the TS-50 and Icom 2350. I have no idea where to start as far as a class/demo goes however. I can get on the air and let them make contacts, but how in depth would you go? Also, I have had scouts and my son, talk during Special events and use the Special even call, but If I just let them call using my call what is the propper way? I vaguely remember something about that on my test but that was years ago.... |

Basically, you will make the initial call, then say something like "this is KD5TXX with third party traffic" then put the Scout on the mic. When he's done, put the next Scout on and so on. When the QSO is over (or 10 minutes whichever comes first) ID and say KD5TXX end of third party traffic, or something to that effect. IMO, make a few QSO's on a repeater and gage the Scouts interest. Then if they seem interested, ask them if they want to talk to someone far far away on HF. A digital mode on HF might interest them too since even a Weblo has a cell phone and knows how to text. |

We did this in our club station, and talked to a ham 1200 miles away. Afterwards I emailed him the Scouts' names and he snail mailed back a package with a card for each of the Scouts.
That is the way it should be done! BTW, the Scouts were all very well behaved, and no pushing or jostling, they were quiet, raised their hands to ask questions. They were excellent. Afterwards they asked good questions, and I loaned my R75 so they could do some SWL for their radio merit badges, which they all earned. If interested, IM me for the materials I put together for them as a listening guide, propagation, what to listen for at various times of day, etc. |
I did a cub scout demo a loooong time ago.. think I was like 14 at the time
We just did a 2 meter demo, both repeater and simplex with me running an HT and letting the kids talk to other people. I think we pre-arranged with some of the guys on the repeater but that was forever ago. |
