And for post 5K, a little contest. Guess how many microfarads this capacitor is. Pictured
next to it is a .50BMG case for size comparison. This is all the info you get.

The prize.

A blast from the past,5 copies of CQ magazine from 1974.
Any correct tie guesses will split the CQ's. (I can't imagine one right guess let alone two)
This contest will run until January 18th, 6:00 PM EST. The winner will be announced in this
thread and I'll announce it on the Wednesday night digital net if propagation allows.
Thanks to all on this site, especially this forum! Good luck!

Im going to guess 27000 microfarads

It's old, so I'll say 80 uF.

2200 UF

So what does the winner get? A nice charged cap VIA USPS.

Too tough. Could be anything. At least tell us the voltage rating. Or show us the burn marks...

http://www.rfcafe.com/references/electrical/capacitor-values.htm

there is actually an engineering reason for the value progression of 1, 1.5, 2.3, 3.3, 4.7, 6.8 ...

the rationale is explained (though, IMHO, not very well) on the bottom of the resistor page of the same website:
http://www.rfcafe.com/references/electrical/resistor-values.htm

it is useful to note that capacitor manufacturing tolerances are much, much looser than resistors –– on the order of +/- 20%.

now take a look at the "10% Standard Values" at the very bottom of the resistor page linked to above.  check every other value.

What, did you think I just pulled this estimate out of thin air?  I'm a professional...and my daughter will be 12 on her next Bday.  7 + 5 = 12.

Looks like a 500k microfarad  also known as a 1/2 farad cap.  I used to use them all the time for car stereos.

Im gonna say .5 farad.

And the winner is....

HomeSlice!

It is a 12,000mfd at 40vdc. HomeSlices guess of 3500mfd was the closest beating stanprophet09 by a slim margin.

IM me your mailing addy and I'll send these off to you.

ps: congrats on the win.  for that size can, i suspected high voltage / low capacitance.  in hindsight metal housings are generally not employed on really high voltage caps.
