Available locally from a seller, he has a pair of these AN/PRC-10 Canadian radios.  38 to 55Mhz FM.

What can they be used for?  I know there are kids walkie-talkies in the 49MHz range, as well as baby monitors and the old cordless phones.  Can they be used in that range without a license?  Are they worth getting for $200 for the pair?

Thoughts on these?

The only ham band they might be good for is 6 meters. Using them as "walkie talkies" would be illegal. The baby monitors and toy walkie talkies are limited to 100mW ( one tenth of a watt) IIRC and I'm sure these put out more than that. Also, what mode are they AM or FM?
ETA–– You would need a license to use them on 49 mhz. Not a ham license, but a real FCC commercial/business band license.

For a working pair, $200 is not bad.  You'd be pretty much just talking to whoever had the other radio.  There are plans out there to make a battery adapter.
I've got some PRC-6s with adapters and rechargeable batteries.  The only people I talk to are the ones I give the other PRC-6 to.  I have talked to other hams around town, but that's after I asked them to go to 51.0 MHz.

Probably wideband FM.  15Khz deviation?  Ham radios are 5Khz.
