I ordered one about a month ago,in kit form. Figured it would make a good winter project.  Got an email saying it was backordered,no big deal. Finally got it ,and they sent the assembled radio instead of the kit.  Thought about sending it back, but decided to keep it.  I was playing with it this morning with just a piece of wire hooked to it and its pretty neat.  I should connect it to my G5RV and see what it pulls in  All in all it seems to be a nice little battery powered shortwave rig. Would have been fun to build though

I've often wondered about those MFJ kits...thanks for the heads up! enjoy

I built one of these:  Ten Tec 1253

It was a fun kit to build and the finished radio works great for what it is.  If you still want to build a SW kit I recommend it.

I love those little regens. If I had any younger children within my extended family, Christmas would be covered.

I got a Realistic "Globe Patrol" regen kit when I was about 9 or so, and have been hooked on HF every since.
The thing that confuses me the most is that I swear that little radio picked up more signals on a 30' random wire
back in the day than my 897 with an auto-tuned vertical picks up today. Must be that child wonder thing, like
how everything seems so big when you're a kid and when you revisit as an adult it's all smaller.

As far as shortwave broadcasters go, I but you're right.  The internet replaced a lot of them.

Here is my MFJ-8100 running the little MFJ speaker, I like it.

My regens easily pick up more stations than my Icom R-75. I think the whole feedback loop thing helps dig out the weak signals.

May not be true if the R75 was hooked up to a really nice outdoor antenna though.

I miss some of the Pre-9/11 broadcasters...they were, interesting....

I am bidding on one of those on eBay.

Also the receiver on the 897 is deaf.

Ah, yes, good ol' WWCR was always good for some "interesting" listening back then.

Still is..Alex Jones is on there in the evenings. Certainly not as good as it used to be but still.

Here is the one I will be building http://www.electronics-tutorials.com/receivers/regen-radio-receiver.htm

There is a circuit board for 6 bucks, and finding the components is half the fun. If you decided to build one reference the Air Variable Capacitor thread of mine below.

Tip for regens: If you have a frequency counter, put it near the radio (or use a short piece of wire "antenna" on its input) and turn up the regeneration. You will be able to see what frequency you're on

My nephews son turns 8 tomorrow. Another year or two and it will be time for his first rimfire rifle and his first shortwave radio.

Aw man I had one of those. Spent many hours listening to the propaganda broadcasts from both sides of the Iron Curtain.

Gee, I used some too short random wire, the gutters, window screen, anything semi metallic for an antenna. Some worked, some didn't. But wow it was so cool to hear radio stations from halfway across the planet.

Reality is that gigawatt broadcast stations like Voice of America have been rendered obsolete by the Internet. Hence not as many signals to listen to today.

That is what I was going to do, after the simple build I was going to experiment with a larger band switch, and a frequency counter. I had also contemplated a meter, although not an s meter it would be more of an AF meter.

But I think a transmitter homebrew for CW will be in order
