No particular reason why, but a contact in Japan has always been a DX goal for me. Made my first contact there today on 12 meters SSB. I know, cool QSO bro. |

Seriously...cool QSO bro.
For me it was just the thought of talking literally to the other side of the planet on a piece of wire I threw up in a tree. I call that COOL. You know that's exactly the lure of DX for me. Radio period, really. Ditto -and Cool QSO Bro ETA: Bold |

Back in the early 90's I would work Japan in the evening from Ohio on a pretty regular basis. Back then 10 meters was in like Flynn and contacts to JA with 5 watts (and a 5el monoband beam) was easy. One ham, Row, JA1SGX and I would connect once a week or more. He would say "Cal turn you power down to 2 watt and see if we can QSO.") Many times we could! The JA's used to monitor 28.325 alot and most were county hunters. When I moved out here in '99 I was able to work JA's from the mobile. They would ask me if I was in "Gweenwee" (Greenlee) county. When I wasn't, they would ask me if I could drive there as it was a rare county with few hams.
Europe from here in AZ sux. Had much better luck to Europe from Ohio. |

I heard one contesting one time and he was trying to pull a Lima Lima station out of the pileup. He kept saying "is there a Rima Rima station? Rima Rima only, prease". |

I can hit Europe all day long, but never had any luck with JA, nor have I even heard that many. I guess the best conditions are past my bedtime. Being in Washington State, I have the exact opposite. I can work Japan like it is next door. Europe on the other hand... |
