Ok, so im driving for 5 hours tomorrow and decided I should get HF in my car, I have a friend's outbacker and magmount that im thinking about buying from her, threw it on, plugged it all in and then ran a ground to the metal on the inside of my trunk. I took the paint off, punched a hole and bolted the ground to the metal, which is welded to the fenders and trunk lid.
I dont have an easy way to run a ground to the frame or I would have done that right away.

The antenna tunes just fine on 14-10, and it does tune on 40, but not on 80, not a big deal, probably insufficent grounding, but whatever.

My main problem is I cant hear anything, everyonce and a while a faint voice, but unreadable. Noise isnt bad, my smeter doesnt even register anything, that might be fishy though....

Any thoughts or suggestions? The bands do suck right now, but not bad enough to where I cant hear anything

Physically short antennas aren't exactly known their their gain...

Compared to a high-mounted dipole, received strength is going to be down quite a bit.

Are you sure you've got the RF preamp turned on? Attenuator turned off? RF gain all the way open?

Yup, I tried getting someone across town and didnt hear anything, I think there may be something wrong with the mount

Update pretty sure it is the mount, I opened it up and the center conductor on the coax is broken from the mount, and just barely making contact. probably enough to let it tune somehow. any way, ill update later if it helps.

how is your SWR ?

Another thing to consider during local QSO's is antenna polarization. The mobile antenna is vertical, and the base (if using a dipole etc..) is going to be horizontally polarized. Big loss in signal strength, maybe 30db or more between the two.

I got it, the mount was broken, a little solder and it looks decent, there was a lot of corrosion inside of it and I kind of want to pull the coax out and redo the whole thing, but the mount its self isn't that great so im thinking about just buying a new one.

we fixed it up and stuck it on and the meter gave me 1.5 on 20 meters, so I left and on my way back i made my first mobile HF QSO, Brazil.

starting at 2100z tomorrow I should be on the air, until 0200z.

come and find me, from 2100 to 2200 I will be in ND, and after that MN.

after a little road side soldering, and lightning dodging I made it to my destination and got 14 Qsos, 4 dx. besides the bad weather messing up conditions id say things were great!
