I wondered WTF he would need a station laptop for.

Now I know!

Instant access to call signs and other general info.

Echolink, programming software, reference materials, logging software, General class test questions, and porn!

Bill

ETA, manuals!  It is very easy to access manuals from laptop versus having a box full of paper to rummage through.

Are you crazy?  Never leave any evidence of hobby expenditures!

When I die, it will all be sold cheap anyway.

Guns, trains, radio equipment, computers and electronics...Nope, no clue what it cost!

Laptops are also handy for operating packet / APRS and running the front end software for your VNA.

You also need one for purchasing equipment online.

I'm going to gigaparts to order a signalink right now.  I've been bitten by the PSK31 bug.

And you don't need the latest Whiz-Bang laptop.  An older model will suffice for most ham use.

It arrived today –– just in time for Field Day.    To paraphrase Robert Hamburger, "I love it with all of my body –– including my peepee."

So far I've analyzed almost everything around the house that looks like an antenna.  Still trying to catch that cat though.    I now have a handle on why my FD double-inverted-V was great on 40 and needed the tuner for 20.  A great many antenna construction projects are about to get revived and/or started.  Got 6 projects in various stages now and 4 more waiting to be birthed into the world.

That's my write-up for now.  So yes, everyone needs a laptop for ham radio.
