Callsign: Doc. For my wild hair and DeLorean
OH, USA

Passed tech right before (like, the day before our governor issued the stay-at-home order) the COVID craziness kicked off. Will take General as soon as testing resumes.
Currently, I've got a couple of Yaesu HTs (FT-60R, FT-70DR) and an FTM-7250DR mobile unit as my base station. Working on plans for permanent antennas. Also have an 80m CW kit from QRPLabs with a half wave dipole strung between a couple of trees. |
"We're all new here, kid. The old ones are either dead or in the hospital. What the hell did you expect, a two week pass to Paris? Get in line and do what you're told, or you'll be dead before sunup."
|
Got my tech license in I think 99. Was about to test for general but they could only find two VE a week before the covid shutdown in my state.
I have a UV5R, a qt-8900 mobile, and a yasue ft-891 with a 10m dipole. |

I guess I qualify as an Old Timer.
Novice 1961 (age 12) Technician 1962 (Went overseas as a Signal Corps officer in the early 70's and license lapsed in 1975) Advanced 1977 (back to the states and got re-licensed) Extra 1993 (was pushed by my then 13 year old son who also passed Extra test at that time He now holds my dad's old Extra callsign.) I work mostly HF. I like portable ops and digital modes. Radios: FTDX3000 (base) IC-7200 (2 ea.) FT-891 (mobile and portable) 3 ea. Kenwood TM-V71As scattered around. Couple of Kenwood and Yaesu HTs Lots of antennas, mostly wires and field antennas. Never had an amplifier, always had 100W max. Still managed DXCC and 6 band WAS. Still enjoy the hobby after all these years. |

Tech in '94 (13 weeks and 3 days wait time for license in the mail)
Tech+ in '95. General after the 13wpm was dropped. Hoping for Extra this summer Shack contents are boxed up mostly: FT-450D (NIB still packed) HTX-10 TM-281 Moto mobile GTX 900mhz IC-2720 (mobile) HTX-202 (2nd version) IC-T90a UV5R 3 KPC-3's (one needs a pair of new caps) |

Tech in 2009 and never did anything with it.
Finally unboxed and set up the FT-8800 I've owned for 20 years and never used. Decided to make a radio test and lol ended up to a guy less than a mile away ! Setting up a TK-8180HK as a dedicated GMRS rig for both at home and outfitting my vehicles with them. I'm in the city and since covid has both given some people extra time and most important motivation we are building a pretty big GMRS network and a couple dozen guys are studying for their Tech. One just passed his test remote yesterday. |

Who keeps the roster?
I came across an old copy of it and realized that even though I changed my callsign several years ago the roster hasn't been updated. |

Tech in 2009 - played around a little bit but then got sidetracked with kids/work and never did anything else with it.
Now with all this extra time I got bit by the bug and started tinkering again. I'm currently studying for my General test coming up in a couple of weeks... but I've been busy with getting on the air more. Current radios include: Yaesu FT-2980R with Diamond X30A antenna powered by a Yaesu FP-1023A power supply Yaesu FT-4XR with Diamond SRJ77CA antenna Radio Shack HTX-242 with mag mount mobile antenna QRP-Labs QCX 40 meter with a homemade dipole antenna in the attic 2 Baofeng UV-82 handhelds with Nagoya 771 After I pass the test I am going to buy a proper all mode/all band HF rig. ***EDIT*** - I passed my general test today! Thanks to the Vermont Exam Test team - testing online was easy and I didn’t experience any issues whatsoever! |

New tech here. Been listening thru a Yaesu VX-8 now transmitting. Just put a Diamond V-2000A in the attic (HOA) and that really extended my legs. Plenty of repeater traffic on VHF/UHF.
On Thurs, I should be receiving my new to me FT-897D. The fun can really start then. Sketching out a fan dipole to string up in the rafters. Need to crack the books on getting my General but I’m in no hurry. |

I'm with the government. I'm here to help.

EA is harder to memorize the questions as the material more complicated. I'd recommend watching a study course on YouTube in addition to the online prep tools, I liked the KE0OG video series.

Wife and I are Tech's IIRC i was licensed in 06? Wife a couple years later as I had to constantly complain to get her to do so.
HT's VX6R need new batteries yet again. Mobile/ Home Yaesu 8800 and 8900 Uniden Bearcat BCT15X Uniden Bearcat BCD3252 Need to work on programing again. Local County has gone digital and secure for LEO. Neighboring county is still in open so far. County I work in also went digital, not certain if secure. But I believe so. Bummer on those. I am wanting to get into Aredn and start connecting app on phone with radios for use with app. If anyone can help with that, it would be appreciated. Still waiting on friends to get licensed.... Getting bored on that one. Can't help them learn what they don't want to learn. I have been trying to get back into it myself, but have been finding it difficult to do so. I also have a County Comms radio that will pick up HAM bands, am Im wanting to listen in to nets. Just have not had the luck in doing so, so far. |
