Some comments: I know you're still working on technician, but General might be a very useful goal for the situation you describe. HF would give you a lot more capability for longer distance contacts and a lot better environment for day to day recreational use if that would be something you would enjoy. It might be useful to take a look at some different books/study materials. Some get better results from different styles of presenting the material. I'm a fan of the Gordon West books, but what's important is what would work for you. I guess what I'm saying is that if you're struggling with your current study materials, maybe a different style of presentation might be helpful to you. If you're using online stuff now, maybe getting ahold of an ARRL or Gordon West book might be just the ticket. Once (hopefully) you find something that works for you and you get through the Technician test, I would immediately start working on General, keep at it while you're in that mode and still have the Tech material fresh in mind. The SDR receivers are a great learning tool. The images you show with the signal spikes at regular spacing... those spikes are noise generally from switching power supplies as are omnipresent in modern homes. Sometimes you can "choke" the feedlines and significantly reduce or eliminate that noise, but often it takes more attention to the sources inside the home. It can be quite an exercise. |

I appreciate all of that. Yes, I still struggle with it, because I've never been good at memorizing anything, and my mind races too fast even when reading. I can read a paragraph, and have no idea what I just read, because I'm thinking about other things at the same time. I'll look for the books you mentioned, and see if they're in a format that looks more helpful. Thanks. |

I passed my technician test on 7 Oct 23 and passed my General test today (6 Jan 24). I have been using the Pass Your Amateur Test books by Craig "Buck" K4IA and also taking the practice tests on QRZ. I also took the Extra test today but did not pass it. I wasn't expecting to pas the Extra since I have not studied at all for it. I did get 24 out of 50 correct though. I went ahead and got the Kindle version of the Pass Your Amateur Extra test book after I got home from testing. I started reading that book today and will probably start taking practice exams in a day or two. |

There are free online resources that let you just go through the question/answers, or if you want to dig in a little more there are study materials that go into a bit more detail in explaining things. Some prefer a book vs online, and some like video presentations. Depending on what you want to do with amateur radio, you might look ahead to a higher class license which would allow more privileges on the HF bands, but that would be a different kind of radio and operating environment. |

Question- I have downloaded a couple ham radio study books and they mostly seem to be oriented toward question memorization. Could any of you recommend me something more in the conventional textbook format? I am boring and would prefer to just read something that flat out explains everything. Thanks |

With the caveat that I haven't seen firsthand any of the current study books, I would suggest either the ARRL or the Gordon West license prep books. ARRL's traditionally read somewhat like a textbook while the Gordon West books had a bit more of a "conversational" style. Either one would give you a more detailed answer as to why an answer is the answer. You know what they call folks who get the maximum number of questions wrong on the test that's still a passing score? Extra Class Licensee. It's what you learn and do after you pass the tests that determines what you get out of amateur radio. The real world is an open book test. |

I'm on the verge of going for my license. All the Arfcom talk about the Baofeng radios for cheap on Amazon has piqued my interest. I'm not real convinced yet about how much I'd ever use it, but I'm getting more and more serious. I took a class and started studying for it a long time ago, back when Morse Code was a prerequisite, but I didn't finish it. Coincidentally, a local club has planned a "Tech-In-A-Weekend" 2-day class and test for Technician, so that has spurred me along. I've read the arfcom ham forum threads and I'm looking at hamstudy.org and hambook.org sites. I like the hambook format much better. The hamstudy "study" portion just seems to be flashcards that ask me questions I don't know the answer to. I guess you learn by getting answers wrong? Oddly, only my second flashcard at hamstudy asked me In which of the following circumstances may the control operator of an amateur station receive compensation for operating that station? One of the choices was When the communication is made to obtain emergency information for a local broadcast station so I picked that, based on what I'd read on hambook, which said If you're helping out during an emergency or an emergency drill, and it's related to your day job, you can get paid for your time. Just remember, the radio part needs to be a small piece of what you're doing, not the main event. Nope, hamstudy said it should be When the communication is incidental to classroom instruction at an educational institution Sheesh! It's kinda confusing when two study sites can't seem to agree on an answer. Anyway, I'm on the cusp of more seriously studying for the test, especially if I can get into the weekend class/test later this month. I should find that out this week. |

I started my licensing by watching This video a day or 2 before the test date and then used hamstudy.org for practice. I bet a class would be pretty sweet, but if it doesn't happen give the video a shot. Good luck! |
| Very helpful link. I like the format. I watched half of it last night and the other half tonight (4hr). Part 2 is 3 hours, and that's next. Passing the test shouldn't be a problem. |

Passed my Technician today. 100% on the test. The combination of those 3 YT videos plus hamstudy.org made it easy. I thought the General test also included questions from Technician, so I went for it, despite not studying any of it. Got 19/35. Another guy did the same thing (with zero study) and got 15/35. Oh well, I really don't see myself getting into the HF/DX stuff anyway. Now have to wait for the .gov shutdown to do anything about it. |

The question pools change on a rotating schedule every 4 years. The current Technician pool expires June 30, 2026, General will change in 2027, and Extra in 2028. If you got 19/35 with no study, I would think it wouldn't take much to get you over that hurdle to General. |

Congratulations! In time (hopefully very little time), the HF bug will bite and you will want to get the General and maybe the Extra. Meanwhile, enjoy the openings on 10 meters still going on after the peak of the current solar cycle and do some HF SSB! Walkie-talkie comms are cool, but it gets old after awhile unless your local repeaters are hotbeds of activity, which few are anymore. |
| I see what you mean about the local repeaters. I have listened to them at various times and heard absolutely nothing. I asked a ham friend about it and he said there isn't much talking on them unless I CQ. |

The really funny thing about the other guy who didn't study General at all was that they initially scored him at 31/35. I was totally amazed that he could do that and I kept asking him questions about how he could do that; like did he have a ham in his family or previous exposure or previous reading or anything. Nope. Well after a short time, it came out that they had used the wrong key to grade his test, and he really only got 15. To me, that's even more amazing that his wrong answers should so closely match a wrong key. He should buy a lottery ticket.
