Well even though he's 28 I'm still proud of him!. We went to the Midland, TX Hamfest Saturday and all the way over, about a 3 1/2 hour drive, he was studying for his General test. We got up that morning got to the Fest and wondered around for a while, YES we spent more money than we should have but hey it's a HAMFEST! Anyway he says about mid-morning "I'm going for it!". Great son do your best! So test time comes and he's off to take it. Comes back in about an hour with THE paper in his hand!!! So now father and son are both Generals and we now have a group of 4 to study for our Extra!
He'll probably get his Extra before his old man, but hey the young ones have it made over us old farts!! 73's Sarge and Sarge Jr. proudly adding the AG behind his call! |

And an old fart can pass the Extra too - I did it about two years ago (found it was mostly stuff I knew once & thought I forgot, just had to chip away at the old melon and dig it out)! How was the Midland Hamfest otherwise? I'm just a couple hours away in SE NM and wanted to go but I had already spent my first quarter toy budget before the XYL could get at it & buy something stupid she thinks we need (new furniture, for example). Sooo, maybe next time! |

Midland was good! A bunch of "stuff", Austin Amateur Radio Supply was there and a coax company out of Houston. Don't think the coax folks did real well, prices weren't bad but didn't look like anybody was buying coax! Sarge Jr bought a used Kenwood dual band HT a TH 70A I think, he already has a new Kenwood 2m HT and he bought my FT 840 a year or so ago so he's pretty well set for radios! I picked up a Wouxon dual band and ALL the accessories plus an extra battery, 2 slot charger, so you can charge the radio and a extra battery at the same time etc, etc, a Diamond dual band antenna to go with it and the price still came out well under 300. I've programmed it and been cycling the batteries to get them "conditioned" and will report at a later time how the little HT does!
