Went camping with the Cub Scouts this weekend and took along my 817.  Strung up a PAR EF 10/20/40 antenna and right off spoke to a JOTA station in VA on 20m with 2 1/2 watts SSB.  Then talked to Ontario on 17m using a tuner (so actually probably less than 2 watts)  He couldn't believe I was QRP Portable.  You do have to yell maybe but it's worth it cause it ain't easy.

I was just researching those 10/20/40 end fed antennas. They seem to be the ticket for QRP

My friend and I grabbed two packages of 30 ft 16 ga wire and made up a little antenna today.  We took it out to the top of a mountain in a state park and tried it out with an 817, an LDG tuner, and a battery.  We successfully made two contacts, one in Nebraska and the other in Virginia.  He also checked into a net via relay, but we're not sure where the relay station was.  It's amazing how clear 20 meters was with little to no RFI sources within several miles.

Thanks for the idea on the end-fed antenna.

I'm building a Retro-75 - my Retro-75 Article - and this sort of antenna scaled to 75m might be a nice match!

I'm impressed with the antenna.  Got the idea off here too in fact.
