Can ya'll school me on what to look for on a basic CB Radio for the jeep and for the home ?

I have two hand radios programmed for ham but want the cb for emergencies.

TIA.

Personally, I like the Cobra 29 series, or you could even try out the Cobra 25.

http://www.cobra.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=30

I have the 29 with Weather/NightWatch/Blue Tooth (don't use the blue tooth part), just wanted the all black face, as well as the night watch feature (dimly lights up the words so you can see what's on the radio when driving at night), and I also wanted the weather feature.

I had the basic 29 LTD before and there was nothing wrong with it, it worked great.  Plus it has a little SWR meter which is fairly accurate.

Not sure who will be on CB during an emergency, but I mostly use it when I am offroading and on road trips.

along these lines, what do you guys think of the portable/handheld cb radios for use off-roading? the cobra hh38wxst seems pretty reasonable, but i don't know much about the various brands. i like the portable aspect since it could be used in multiple vehicles as well as atv/snowmobile. range wouldn't need to be great since most 4x4 use would be within a mile or so.

i doubt you would get a mile out of an HT CB while inside the truck. if you added an external antenna it would help you out greatly.

Cobra 29 or 25, Uniden PC66, or if you can find one, a PC33. Handheld CB's are almost worthless.

I've used one with an external antenna.they put out 4 watts just like all CB's . I talked from one house to another which is about 7 miles. I have a couple like new Cobras with plug adapters i'm thinking of selling. Get a couple of BNC to PL259 adapters for the external antenna and it will work just about as well as anything. There the 36SST which is the model before. they don't have the weather channels.

SSB will get you better range than an AM only CB radio.   I've had good luck with the Uniden Grant and Galaxy 949 (typical mobile sized units).  A build-in SWR meter is handy.

For use at home, the small RoadPro 6AMP 12VDC adapters will give you sufficient power in a cheap package to run any legal 4W CB.

Your local Pilot or Flying J will usually have a few radios you can browse through (probably including at least one Galaxy SSB model), as well as mobile antennas.

This is consistent with what I've found in various 4x4 forums. External antenna makes a huge difference. Not much to say against the radio itself. And for talking among vehicles in a group or jumping out with the radio to spot for someone on the trail, it works just fine.
