So for all you lucky bastards that are at Dayton, please post of the cool things you are seeing (with pics if possible). I'm curious about any new models of radios that may have to be on my new wishlist - or new models that might subsequently push current model prices down |

I didn't take any pics because I was busy squirming through the crowds. I did get to meet a few other Arfcomm hams though. That was pretty cool. |

Sorry, no pics I don't think CUTIE is a call sign.

Quoted: I wasn't there, but here's what I've gathered about new gear. Alinco announced a new HF Radio: Link Icom announced the all band all mode DStar HF Radio IC-9100: Link Kenwood announced a new HF Radio: Link I haven't heard anything else except about the Yaesu FT-8GR which was announced some time ago. Mmm, any pricing guesses from anybody yet on those? Still trying to figure out what my first HF rig will be. Late this year is probably when I'll be seriously looking, so those may be available by then with any luck. |

That may or may not be with the dstar option. The nice part of the 9100 is that 2 meters will have 100 watts and 70cm will have 75 watt output. There will be an add on 1.2ghz module available and it will support sat work with Doppler memories. |

Hmmm sounds interesting. I'm still leaning toward an FT-950 as my first HF rig since it has DSP and an antenna tuner built in - but am thinking it might be too much as a starter rig. Also looking at the FT-450, but then I see the tuner you can get with that says it's "Not for use with long wire antennas" I assume that means you can't use a dipole? Odd. Was also considering the IC-7000 - so if the 9100 isn't a ton more, it might be an option if it comes with a built in tuner - otherwise it probably puts it a bit out of my price range. |

Kenwood has a prototype of a new aprs handheld. They had nothiing in their booth about it but I got stopped by Gordo, and the founder of aprs stopped and was showing off the prototype. |

No internal tuners will do a wire that well. They are typically limited to 3:1 tuning ratio. The Icom will have DSP standard. |

If so, bah, back to the drawing board ![]() ETA: Nevermind, just found some references that say the tuner on the 950 can also only handle about 3:1. Blah. |

ETA: Nevermind, just found some references that say the tuner on the 950 can also only handle about 3:1. Blah. A quality tuner can be found for under 200. Personally after using auto and manual tuners I far prefer the manual variety. |
