I wrote a local VEC about signing up for an exam.
He indicated that to take technician and general would be $15 for each element. What is the fee, and how shall it be paid? It's $15 per exam element...cash or check/money order payable to ARRL/VEC. We'll take care of that and all the exam paperwork on June 5. For directions to the test site, go to: I was led to believe (ARRL site, and others) that it was $15 for test day and if you passed one element, you were allowed to keep trying the higher levels until you flunked. |

If you pass the Tech, there is no additional charge to take the General.
If you pass the General, there is no additional charge to take the Extra. If you take an element and do not pass, but feel that if you do it over, you can, you will have to pay the fee again. |

Each VEC Group sets its own fees.
Some groups charge a fee, some do not. Some fees cover all testing, including retest of elements at the same session, some do not. Some fees cover one try only of each element at the same test session. Here are a few of the VECS: Laurel Amateur Radio Club, Inc. Name: Jim Nowotarski Call Sign: N3GOO P.O. You will be wrong if you make that assumption. 73 Steve K9ZW BLOG: With Varying Frequency - Amateur Radio Ponderings |

The ARRL Sets and Announces their fee each year. I would point out, the FCC does not charge, the VEC's do. They are doing all the paperwork, submitting the information to the FCC, etc. The FCC does not get a penny of the fee money. That all goes to the VEC and the VE's for expenses. That fee money rarely pays gas money for the VE's, really.
If you can't afford the test fee, you probably can't afford a radio, either. |
