Here is a little story I thought you guys might find interesting...
I was looking through correspondence sent home by my grandfather during WWII, and came across a Amateur Radiogram sent from Clark Field, Philippines on September 19th, 1941. The message was received by a station in San Diego, CA and then mailed to my Grandmother. Of course, bring a Ham, I looked up the sending and receiving call signs. The receiving call sign is no longer active, but the sending call sign is. According to QRZ, the gentleman was born in 1925, so it is pretty decent odds that it is the same person that sent the message 69 years ago. For those that are not familiar with the history of the Philippines during that time, they were attacked by the Japanese on the fist day of the war. American Forces later surrendered and those at Clark field joined the Bataan Death March, later being interred at Camps O'Donnell and Cabanatuan. Many were then sent to Japan to work as slave labor for the remainder of the war. There are not a lot of survivors left, and those that I have met have been a pretty tight-knit group. I am going to send him a letter with a copy of the radiogram. It will be very interesting to see what I receive in return. |
