Just curious, how many of yall use 220mhz? Myself and some friends use it around here. I think its a awesome band. I made a approx. 100 mile contact while mobile one day on my alinco 220 rig.

I don't, but I plan to sooner or later.  I hear the same things as you do, its a great band with little noise and great range.

I used to when I lived back in Ohio, but not here in AZ.

I no longer have a 220 rig, but did use one quite a bit 10 - 15 years ago.
It seems like I heard that some of the band had been taken away; is that true?

there is a fairly new 220 repeater in my area, but it's 40 miles away, the guy is a huge VHF fan.  he's crosslinked it into local 440 crossband to a 2 m repeater.. yup, uses his 220 to talk to a 440 machine that hooked up to a 2 meter repeater.. wow.. and it's a stand alone 220 repeater.

from what I've heard, the 220 band is better at propagation then 2 meter? "when conditions are right".  I know I'm looking for a lesser expensive 220 band radio. just to have on hand and use in base station.

I still have some gear, but don't have it setup. I have an Icom IC-38A and a Kenwood Tm-331 for mobiles. I also have an Icom IC-03AT and an IC-3AT. I need to get them hooked up to an antenna and put the mobiles in our cars. There are two repeaters in the AO that work very well. The 3At is useless since the two local repeaters require tones to access.

I have one hand-held for 220mHz...
but honestly I am more interested in 900mHz... almost have enough gear to build a repeater for 900 as a companion for my 50mHz repeater...

I did a lot with 900- I have all the parts to do a repeater-  800mhz maxtrac converted for a receiver, duplxer already tuned, TK-941 for TX,  but honestly I don't have the time so I am probably going to sell it all off very soon.

220 is neat. The propagation more like 2m, but with smaller antennas- a very handy band if you have lots of like minded folks who want to talk.

Another heat aspect is that a whole lot of the scanners out there don't RX 220- less potential eavesdroppers.

That is a nice aspect of it, my friends and I that have the Alinco 220 radios have the digital voice board in them for extra "privacy"

I have a few friends who have their own repeaters on 220    My vx8 has 220 on 1 watt and I picked up a wouxum chinese radio that does 2M and 220for 99.00 on ebay which is really nice.

I spend more time on 440 these days as I have my own repeater and several friends have their own as well.
