I went to Radio Shack and I was going to buy a PRO 135 to listen to Central Dispatch while not a work. But the sales person at radio shack told me I should get a tripple trunking this one scanner because I would not be able to hear everything do i really need it or was he just blowing smoke up my@$$. I will be listioning to only the County of Muskegon. Also do you recommend this scanner I really dont want to spend more than  $100 on it if you have other suggestions thanks for you help.

I would go with the Uniden BCD396T

Cost quite a bit more, but will covre P25 digital systems. A lot of places are switching over to them.

It will be several years before our county switches over due to budget problems.

If you aren't worried about MPSCS, then the only problem I see is:

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?cs=KNNP963

I do not know enough to interpret that, but I believe it indicates that county dispatch uses a trunking system.  Hopefully, someone more familiar with such systems or with radioreference can shed light on that.

Everything else appears to be common FM or AM, not trunking or digital, so most scanners should work fine, with the above two caveats.

I really want to get back into scanning.

When  I was 15 (13 years ago), I saved up my lawn mowing money and picked up a good radio shack scanner that cost $300.

I loved it. Anyone have tips on how to get back into it? any good websites with frequencies?

Radioreference.com is the place I always turn when I'm looking for a freq.

Well I bought a pro 97 anybody use one? If so how do you like it? I was messing with the program win 97 is it worth it to buy a cable to program it or just punch it all in manualy.

I just bought a PRO-164. I use it to listen to the Huntsville, AL Public Safety Motorola system.

I have a pro-95.  The manual kinda sucks, but set up one frequency and group and the rest will come easier.

Lay out how you want to set it up before you actually do, though.

You want groups set up so that you can turn the thing and disable every group except for local police and maybe fire, for instance.  Then hit a button and have it scan both local stuff and the sheriff's stuff for nearby areas.  Another button for the local city which you might leave on while you turn off your own town's, since the city's is more interesting.  Another button for ham radio freqs since you want to be able to skip them when you feel like hearing public safety, and vice versa.  Etc.

A cable and the right software do come in handy, for when you inevitably think "wait, I want this in that other group", but it's not necessary, and you indicated that you're tight on money, so I'd skip it for now.
